Wellness Wednesday: Tracking My Fitness Goals
Today ladies I am retiring good old “61” and started thinking about my fitness goals in 2019 for 62.
This year I tried to stay on target with my fitness goals but as I got busier at the end of the year with my interior design business and the Influencers of Midlife Summit I found I wasn’t working out as much as I would like.
I try to exercise regularly 3 times a week but many days I find myself sitting at the computer too much and know how unhealthy a sedentary lifestyle can be. I needed a watch that would remind to get up and get moving. I want to reach my daily fitness goal of 10,000 steps. (Even though they now suggest we do 15,000 steps.)
Sedentary Lifestyle Health Effects
- Physical inactivity may increase the risks of certain cancers.
- Physical inactivity may contribute to anxiety and depression.
- Physical inactivity has been shown to be a risk factor for certain cardiovascular diseases.
- People who engage in more physical activity are less likely to develop coronary heart disease.
- People who are more active are less likely to be overweight or obese.
- Sitting too much may cause a decrease in skeletal muscle mass.
- Physical inactivity is linked to high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels.
After watching the Apple watch commercial with the bearded guy, I decided to investigate into purchasing a fitness watch that was perfect for my needs. (I thought it was comical that the watch actually told the guy in the commercial to stand up.)
I also wanted a watch to track my sleeping pattern which may be the reason why my blood pressure is higher in the morning than in the afternoon because my body never really cools down at night. Restless sleep is another cause of high blood pressure.
I purchased the Fitbit Charge 3 after researching the best fitness tracker for 2018.
I didn’t need all the bells and whistles of the Fitbit Versa or the Apple watch 4 but they are also worth considering for tracking your fitness goals and your heart rate.
Below you can see my heart rate during my workout. It’s showing my heart rate at 102 and I’ve done 3811 steps. Normal resting heart rate is 60-80 BPM. Mine is usually between 60- 69 BPM.
The Fitbit Charge 3 is waterproof and is connected to my smartphone through an app. It buzzes when someone is texting me or calling me. I never answer my phone when I’m working out but it’s nice to see who called me without answering the phone.
The big thing for the Charge 3 though is that it’s the best option for sleep tracking. It blows away all its rivals as improved heart rate technology can take a look at your deep, light and REM sleep. You need a good balance of these stages to feel rested, and that’s what the Charge 3 focuses on.
That’s not all. The Charge 3 also comes with a relative SpO2 blood oxygen sensor. In the long term, this will hopefully let Fitbit identify conditions like sleep apnea. In the short term, Fitbit will be using the sensor to detect breathing irregularities with the Sleep Score Beta, which is coming to Fitbit Labs later this year.
- Sleep Stages via heart rate
- Sleep Insights
- 24/7 heart rate
- VO2 Max data and step tracking
- SpO2 sensor
- Guided breathing exercises
- iOS and Android

I look forward to the next year as a 62-year-old woman and keeping my fitness goals for 2019. There are a lot of women over 50 who are living a healthy lifestyle and living their best lives now.
I really enjoy using a fitness tracker to keep me moving and taking care of my heart at the same time.
Do you use a smartwatch or fitness tracker watch?

Hi Robin
I bought hubby the same fitness tracker, the Fitbit charge 3, as that is what he asked for. I will get his Fitbit ( nice hand me down). My dad told me once that his watch told him to get up! I thought it was funny, yet your watch shouldn’t be telling you that, right! ? Sounds like you have great goals for the New Year.
