Skin Cancer Awareness with Cabana Life

May is skin cancer awareness month. I am wearing Cabana life with UV+50 protection.

Ladies, did you know that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month?  Today I am sharing a perfect summer dress from Cabana Life that has UPF 50+protection. This dress is perfect for looking stylish while protecting your skin!

This post is sponsored by Cabana Life, however, all opinions are my own.

I have to admit I’ve been terrible at protecting my skin from sun damage when I was younger and now I am older and wiser about the effects of too much sun on our skin. Because my father has had skin cancer I am also at risk for developing skin cancer. I see my dermatologist every year for a complete skin exam.

Everyone should see a dermatologist see if you are at risk for developing skin cancer. I wrote about wearing sunscreen protection here.

Skin Cancer Facts

  • No matter your skin type you run a risk of skin damage or skin cancer.
  • One in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
  • Parents slack on sun protection as their kids get older.
  • 42% of men and 27% of women never use sunscreen. (Gasp!)
  • One person dies of melanoma every hour (every 54 minutes)
  •  More than 5 sunburns = double the risk for melanoma!!

Who’s at Risk?

Skin Type

Your skin type is a major factor in your risk for skin cancer, including melanoma. And while it’s true that people with fair skin tones,(like me,) are more at risk for sunburn, sun damage, and skin cancer, UV exposure can raise skin cancer risk even if you tan and don’t burn. There’s a quiz that can tell you what level of skin risk you have for developing skin cancer. (I took the quiz and have a type 3 skin.)

Take the quiz

Atypical Moles & Your Skin

Did you know people with 10 or more atypical moles have 12x the risk of developing melanoma? That is why it’s so important to see a dermatologist.

The ABCDE Warning Signs

  • A is for Asymmetry. Most melanomas are asymmetrical.
  • B is for Border. Borders tend to be uneven and may have scalloped or notched edges, while common moles tend to have smoother, more even borders.
  • C is for Color. Multiple colors are a warning sign.
  • D is for Diameter and Dark. While it’s ideal to detect a melanoma when it’s small, it is a warning sign if a lesion is the size of a pencil eraser or larger.
  • E is for Evolving. Any change in size, shape, color or elevation of a spot on your skin, or any new symptom in it, such as bleeding, itching or crusting, may be a warning sign to see your doctor.

Tanning

Tanning inside or outside is very damaging to our skin.   Did you know that  there’s a 75%
increased risk of developing life-threatening melanoma from just one indoor tanning session before age 35? Worldwide, there are more skin cancer cases due to indoor tanning than there are lung cancer cases due to smoking!!

Sunburn

Repeated sunburns raise your risk. for fair-skinned people, especially those with a genetic predisposition, like myself, sunburn plays a clear role in developing melanoma.

People who work or play sports outdoors have a greater risk of frequent sunburns that can result in skin cancer.

Skin damage builds up over time starting with your very first sunburn. The more you burn, the greater your risk of skin cancer. Subsequent UV damage can occur even when there is no obvious burn.

Cabana Life

Cabana Life’s founders Melissa and Alyssa created Cabana Life after realizing that lightweight clothing doesn’t protect against the sun’s strong UV rays.

At the time of Melissa’s malignant melanoma diagnosis at 26, they started looking for stylish sun protective options and realized they didn’t exist.

They didn’t want people to have to choose between fashion & function so they set out to create a new trend: sun protection that you actually WANT to wear. Designed with you in mind, Cabana Life uses only the highest-rated UPF & most luxurious fabrics.

Why UPF 50+?

Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) measures a fabric’s effectiveness against both UVA & UVB light.

UPF 50+ is the highest fabric rating available, blocking 98% of UVA & UVB rays.

This shift dress by Cabana Life comes in many different fabric options but I just love the aqua citrus look! It’s so soft and comfortable. I can wear it at home or out on the town. A perfect dress for Mother’s day or when I can finally go out to dinner.

Ways to Protect Yourself in the Sun

  • Protect your skin in UPF clothing like Cabana Life
  • The bigger the brim, the safer your skin
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours
  • Seek shade

  2. Living at a high altitude here in the west, I forget how easy it is to get sunburned. I love the clothing line – will check it out! Nancy

  4. Such a cute dress, Robin! The fact that it offers UV protection is a great bonus. Like you, I’m fair-skinned, and I have additional risk factors as well. A few years ago I had to have a small basal cell cancer removed from my face, and that was definitely a wakeup call. I’m now super diligent about keeping my annual skin check appointment with my dermatologist. Thanks for sharing this important info!

I’ve had a few suspicious spots removed in the last few years. It’s really nothing to ignore. I only wish I would have started using sun block more diligently in my younger days. Thank you for all the important information.

I Also enjoyed showing off our lovely dresses together!

    My Best,
    Nancy

  6. Sun damage is one of those, “I wish I knew then what I know now” things in life. I too have spent a lifetime in the sun and on boats. And, oh did I love having a tan!

The good thing is that we do know better now. We can use products to protect our skin from further damage and wear great clothing like your beautiful dress.

  7. After having so many “spots” checked I am deeply grateful that I’ve missed a bullet getting skin cancer. I remember thinking it was cool to slather on baby oil at the beach. Not so cool now…. These Cabana Life dresses and hats are beautiful and FUNNN. 💓💓

I wish I had been more vigilant in my younger days, too! But I’ve been making up for it! Love that slight a-line shift shape, so comfy and cool…

I have been really good about wearing hat in the summer in the last couple of years. My dad grew up in Santa Monica and used to spend his time on the beach till he was 18: he is paying for it now with having to get skin cancers removed. While I somtimes forget to apply sunscreen to my boys, they also wear hat when it is sunny. I really love this color and print and that is really neat for the dress to have spf protection!

    Great post and tips.
Yes, I used to do some amazing things laying out in my teens and early 20s.
I use a sunscreen every day and prefer makeup with sunscreen too.
Love the colors of your dress! The baby blue and coral are lovely and the shift style is very pretty on you.
