At Home with Robin: My Christmas Home

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving even during this strange year. We only had my son and his family for dinner because my parents decided not to travel during COVID-19. I pray that next year will be different than what we’re experiencing now. For instance, I have been busy decorating homes for Christmas this past week which is why I haven’t shared a post with you.  I have been decorating homes since the 19th of November. My Christmas decorating business is extremely busy but it is something I love to do as an interior designer. So I thought I would share with you my Christmas home tour.

I think this year we’re all going to be enjoying our homes decorated for the holidays more because of staying home this winter and not going out as much. Decorating our homes brings us joy from everyday stressful situations. Don’t you feel happy walking into your home when it’s decorated for Christmas? This year my Christmas decorating services have seen an increase in clients wanting their homes decorated by professionals. So many people are working from home and busy helping their children with the virtual school that doesn’t leave them time to decorate. Many of my clients have purchased new homes and wanted all-new Christmas decor decorated by a designer which is also a service I offer.

However, my commercial decorating services have been nonexistent because office buildings are now empty as we work from home.

I didn’t share my home decorated for Christmas last year because I was so busy with Atlanta’s Homes & Lifestyles Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse.

A Home Wellness Retreat for the 2019 Atlanta Holiday Home

Since it’s easier to talk than writing I’ve made a video discussing how I decorated my sitting room and my dining room. Check it out at the end of this post!

My home is a collection of many Christmas decorations I have purchased over the years when doing holiday showhouses. I thought it would be fun to show you the original showhouses and how the decorations looked in the rooms I decorated.

Front Door

My front door is decorated with shatterproof ornaments that I purchased from Target and large snowflakes I buy at my wholesale floral resources. Those snowflakes first appeared in a holiday designer showhouse I did in 2014.

The Sitting Room

My sitting room is decorated in the traditional red and green Christmas colors. It’s probably my favorite room in the house even though it doesn’t have a tree. It’s so much fun to sit in this room around 4:30 when the lights go on and just enjoy the space.

The garland over the fireplace is 10 years old.  It was first used 10 years ago to decorate the Arnold Palmer Room at the USGA Golf Museum in Far Hills, New Jersey in 2010.  Also, the large Santa standing next to the fireplace and the topiaries were used to decorate the museum before they became permanent members of my Christmas decor.

I’ve been collecting Santas, Nutcrackers, and Annalee Dolls for 30 years. Annalee Dolls were my mother in law’s favorite holiday figures. Collecting them is my way of remembering her during the holidays.

I love this bookcase to showcase all my Christmas figures. Placing the holiday figures on every shelf creates a whimsical look.

The Dining Room

The dining room is a festive color combination of red, rose, coral, and bronze. I use my wedding china for the holidays in the dining room. The centerpiece on the table is a DIY decoupage project I did over 15 years ago using Mod Podge, vintage Christmas cards, tassels, ribbon, and silk flowers. Back when I was so crafty! LOL!!

Placing little floral berry picks in the napkins is a simple trick. The vintage gift box was made using Mod Podge, old tissue paper, antique Christmas cards, and ribbon for the base.  The top was made of floral picks, tassels with more ribbon to the top. I also love using different heights of candles on my tables.

This violin playing Santa has adorned the dining room table for over 15 years. When I saw this guy with the cabbage roses on his hat I knew he had to come home with me. I have cabbage rose floral picks throughout the large floral display on the server behind the table.

These are the cabbage roses in the Christmas floral display.

The Hall Tree

We have a curved wall in the hallway by the dining room going into the kitchen which is a perfect spot for our 7.5′ tree. The color theme continues from the dining room with copper, gold, and glitter fruit picks. The string instruments on the tree are a nod to my violin playing Santa on my dining room table.

The Living Room

The living room is where I have a flocked 9′ Christmas tree decorated in a peacock color scheme of blues, greens, and golds. I love flocked Christmas trees but they are quite messy. Adding eucalyptus bushes and lots of gold picks adds more depth to the flocked tree. I like to put large ornaments way back into the tree to fill up the holes.

The Kitchen

My kitchen table centerpiece changes every year. I like to use real magnolia leaves and evergreen from my yard as well as faux evergreen picks.

This china hutch has a garland loaded with berries that I found at Home Goods years ago. Then I add 2 swags on both ends for added length. The woodland santa and twig deers are perfect atop of the hutch.

Instead of flowers, my island is covered in live poinsettias, orchids, and Christmas cactus during the holidays. I love looking at flowers in my kitchen. The flowers also conceal the kitchen sink when we have guests. A pretty wall of flowers hides a sink full of dishes when I entertain!

The Porch

Since we can see our porch from our kitchen I decorate it. Why not?  Another wonderful Christmas vignette for our family to enjoy.

The table is from our home in New Jersey and the ladder bookshelf makes a wonderful display area for broken nutcrackers and our house plants. The table is set with my Christmas plates and the homemade Christmas stockings I made adorn the chairs. Lots of the Christmas decor is broken and winds up out on the porch. We call this room the home for Christmas misfits. The beautiful centerpiece has the center hurricane glass missing because it was broken in the move to Atlanta, but I couldn’t throw it away.

The Family Room

Our family room is also decorated in blues and greens because of the furniture in the family room and the kitchen. The mantle is adorned with 2 prelit garlands loaded with floral picks, Santa’s reindeer ornaments, and 2 lovely fairies sit overlooking the family room.

Last year I shared with you a small flocked tree that I decorated for my family room. That tree eventually went to the Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse. It now resides in my son’s home.

This room has a 9′ slim tree so that it doesn’t take up space. Decorated with green polka dot ribbon (Sammy LOVES polka dots!)and family ornaments collected for 30 years. We have a tradition of giving our children ornaments every year and when they move out they are given their ornaments. So now the tree has ornaments for Sammy and me. We love collecting college football ornaments of the Clemson Tigers and Florida Gators where our sons attended school. Do you have football ornaments on your tree?

I hoped you enjoyed my home decorated for Christmas. Even though we won’t be entertaining this year I still decorate my home for my husband, Sammy, and myself. The kids came for Thanksgiving and our little Livie loved seeing all the trees. I make sure that the bottom of the trees only have shatterproof ornaments in case Livie wants to play with them. (Which she does.)

This year we hope to be celebrating Christmas in our home in Park City.  I shipped 20 boxes of Christmas decorations to that house and will decorate that home when we arrive. We hope that we won’t be in lockdown but this pandemic has been the year of adjustments. No matter what, we will celebrate Christmas wherever we are.

Just completed a YouTube video of our home.

Here’s another video of our home from 2015. I thought you would enjoy seeing it.

I enjoy decorating my home for Christmas even though we will be in Park City for Christmas and New Year’s!
I plan on seeing you, my friend!

I love this peek into your gorgeous home each year, Robin! I have to agree with Sammy… Polka dots are the BEST! I’m coveting your twig reindeer! They are darling! So many fun color combinations; the coral and red is particularly elegant. Our house is very open plan with different colored walls throughout, so holiday decor (When I get around to it!) tends to be all of a single theme. Right now, I’m just tickled that I’ve got my Advent mantle up. Thank you for letting us spy!

I also enjoy seeing the homes of other bloggers too.

  3. Your decorations are so elegantly festive, Robin! I’m feeling particularly inspired by your front door decorations, maybe because I just put up a pine garland around ours last weekend. For some reason, I’ve never thought of putting ornaments up on it … I think that would really bump it up a notch. Also, I agree with you that Christmas decorating seems to be a higher priority for folks this year. I think we all need the twinkling lights and extra beauty more than usual!

      Happy holiodays!

  8. I love the decor in your home, especially all the beautiful Christmas trees! When my kids were younger, they always wanted to put up so many Christmas decorations, but now that most of them are moved out of the house, I’m going to take it easier this year. I think it will make decorating a less overwhelming task. My favorite part of decorating during the holiday season is getting all of myrugs cleaned, fluffing up the holiday pillows on the couch, and taking a nap after all of the decorating is complete!!

  9. What an exquisite home- and deliciously decorated! Robin- I want to spend Christmas there lol! I don’t know which room I love best- they’re all so good! I love your blueish tree most- so fabulous- never seen one decorated this way before. And how fun is your nutcracker and Santa collection. I’m starting to decorate today- you’ve totally inspired me! Have a great week xx
