Get Dressed and Show Up to Lift Your Mood

No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

Last week I received a lot of emails from women who were alarmed about the growing incidence of completed suicides in the over 50 age group. Many of my readers said there were days when they didn’t get out of their sweatpants or take a shower because they were feeling depressed or sad. Their choice of clothing was also a statement of their emotional health.

We all have days like that, and sometimes it’s caused by excessive stress, a breakup, illness, or for some, natural depression.

How can dressing uplift your Mood?

Dressing up will not cure depression but taking a shower, putting on a little bit of makeup, and wearing a favorite outfit to get out of the house will help lift your Mood.

The act of getting out of your house just to run errands will help boost your Mood. However, I find staying in my house all day brings my energy level down.

How Color affects your Mood

Can the color you wear affect your Mood? Research says yes; color can affect mood, behavior, and stress levels.

As in interiors, rooms painted a certain have an affect our Mood. We use a lot of color theory as interior designers when working with our clients and the same theory applies to fashion.

Wearing reds or purple (which are considered energy colors) will give you an added boost of energy and lift your spirit.

Yellows and orange are cheerful colors and are often associated with sunshine and vitality. In addition, orange is said to stimulate enthusiasm and creativity.

Feeling stressed out or overwhelmed? Wear something blue. Psychologically, blue is the opposite of red — it lowers blood pressure and has a calming effect.

Black is the perfect color to make you feel thinner, and it makes you feel very elegant too. Also, black is associated with funerals, so it’s a good idea to add a pop of color or a strand of pearls to your all-black outfit!

Accessories can lift your spirit.

Accessories add an extra boost to your outfit and can also lift your spirits. For example, do you ever notice that you begin to feel better when you add jewelry to an outfit?

The best accessory for any day: a smile! Your facial expression and the energy you give off may impact your Mood even more than what you are wearing.

Do you dress up to make yourself feel better?

  1. Hi Robin!
Playing catch up as we just arrived home from PA visiting family.
I do dress up to make me feel better. At home, at times I am in pj if working on blog in Am, I do love to dress nicely, as it makes me feel good to look my best. I know before I was diagnosed with EDS, and I was in severe pain, the last thing on my mind was fashion, and my mood depicted that. I wore all black and sneakers most of the time. Things have changed as I love color and wear it all the time.
Love your kimono, what pretty colors on you! I also love your necklaces, great pieces!
