Why The Boho Style is Perfect for Women Over 50

One of my favorite summer styles is Boho fashion. I have so many boho-chic outfits that I have purchased throughout the years. Someone recently asked me on Instagram if boho style is perfect for women over 50? Let me tell you why I think so as a woman over 60!

Why the Boho style is perfect for women over 50

Whether you are a fan of the boho style or not, this fashion is worn by women of all ages. This style has often been called “Hippie Fashion” but my favorite boho style is more “West Coast Boho Chic”. My favorite boho fashionista is Lily Tomlin’s character Frankie from my favorite show Grace and Frankie. I love every outfit Frankie wears on the show!

Apology: This linen top was perfectly ironed before the photoshoot. Except as I put it over my head I wrinkled it! I didn’t realize how wrinkled it was until after I saw the photos. (I hate reshooting but I should have.)  Linen is my favorite summer fabric but it wrinkles terribly!!

Boho Style is Always Trending

Boho style has been around since I was a teenager in the 60’sand 70s. Let’s be honest, boho style is one of those aesthetics that never truly go away. Perhaps today’s boho outfits no longer look like those that were seen at Woodstock. Just remember that fashion recycles every few decades. The young girls have been embracing the boho style for years. They call it vintage boho. What is old is new again. We just happened to have worn it first.

Boho Style is Comfortable to Wear

This floaty ethnic fashion style is perfect for women over 50. Most of the boho styles are designed to flow such as kimonos, maxi dresses, and large floaty tops. Boho chic style also includes adding layers to your outfit that is either oversized or flow when you walk. The preferred fabrics should be made with natural fibers. Always settle for loose-fitted or baggy clothes.

Tips for Creating Your Boho Style

Since bohemian style is an ‘anything goes’ fashion style, it’s tempting to overdo it by piling on too many layers or accessories. The look you want is a carefree vagabond, not a penniless beggar.

For best results:

  • Part of the fun of a carefree fashion like the boho style is the freedom to express your inner artist and mix and match garments and accessories to suit your personal taste. For example, mix unexpected colors like reds and oranges with the traditional boho palette of earth tone colors.
  • Accessorize with artsy jewelry and scarves. Wear large chunky necklaces and bracelets
  • Most garments in a boho wardrobe should be multifunctional. For instance, a scarf may be used as a head covering, a belt, a shawl, or even jewelry, tops as layering tools, and dresses as beach coverups.
  • The preferred shoes to wear for your boho style are flats, thongs, clogs, or boots. No HEELS!

No matter what accessories or styles you choose, enjoy yourself and have fun creating a new wardrobe look. After all, being carefree and enjoying life are key components of a bohemian lifestyle!

True boho style is not , and never has been about carefully curated items bought in a store – its about joyful self expression, repurposing, remaking, often vintage items bought second hand, or handcrafted garments from India, handmade silver jewellery, beaded necklaces, all put together with eclectic panache – it is unique to the wearer and as such, can not be copied. It is not slavish to fashion influences and does not follow the rules. That is why it is called “style”.

    1. Amen! Very well said! feel the same…at 72, people call my style Boho, but the thing is, I’ve always just worn what makes me feel good, the clothes I wear as well as how I decorate my home have to have a vibe that speaks to me…I’ve always been free spirited and my style reflects it…I won’t ever change or follow the crowd

I have to disagree with you about BOHO dressing and the working field, I’ve never had a problem with the way I dress. As a matter of fact, I get compliments all the time. Most.of which are compliments on why I’m always overdressed, no matter where I am. I’ve always dressed the same and love it.

  3. Hi, I’ve never put an age on my bohemian way of dressing, I have always loved the era, I suppose it’s because that’s the way I grew up, back in the day. It’s comfortable and classy.

  4. It would have been nice to see more examples of your “boho” inspiration than just the yellow top, nice as it is.

  5. BUT….where do you buy these clothes?????

WHERE CAN ONE GET THE YELLOW TOP?

  7. It’s time for me to go shopping for a more ‘professional’ which I haven’t worn in a long time. I sit on a board with all men and our meetings are in a public arena. I totally agree that people do react to how you dress then the rest is up to you. Thanks for your fashion posts.

Yes, many of us are going back to work after working from home.
As an interior designer, I can wear anything but boho style is not always appropriate in a professional setting.

  8. Such cute look. I’ve never thought Boho styles were for me, even though I have always loved them. Now I’m rethinking I may want to give them a try. Great look on you, Robin!

      Thank you, Rosemary!
I have never thought we should wear costume boho fashion to get people to look at us.
Boho fashion can often be a costume fashion if we need to make a statement.
