After 50: Eyelash Serum or Eyelash Extensions?

Ladies, many of you have asked lately about my eyelashes and you wanted to know if I was using an eyelash serum or using eyelash extensions.

I started to realize that my eyelashes were thinning out back in 2016 when I was starting to write my blog and taking selfies. It’s amazing how taking a close up photo of yourself (selfie) over 50 makes you very aware of your wrinkles, thinning lips, and lack of eyelashes.

On my trip to Amsterdam in 2016, I shot this selfie on my flight which doesn’t look bad but my eyes are a part of my personality. My eyes like to smile back at you and I felt the lack of thick eyelashes made my eyes look tired. I was wearing volumizer and mascara to thicken my eyelashes but they can only go so far if your eyelashes are thinning out after menopause.

I noticed other bloggers over 50 were wearing either false eyelashes or eyelash extensions and thought I would try eyelash serum first for a more natural look.

Eyelash Serum

I started using an eyelash serum, Alphaeon in January 2017 that was recommended by my dermatologist (because she also sells it in her office.) I applied the serum every day to the top and bottom lashes and saw an improvement in length after 5 months of use. However, the volume was not there. It really did a wonderful job of lengthening my eyelashes. Alpaheon was about  $85.00-100.00 per tube.

You have to apply the serum every day to get results and still use mascara, volumizer to thicken your lashes.

Eyelash Extensions

My daughter Lisa was the one who told me about eyelash extensions when I thought this beautiful girl was blessed with long thick eyelashes. How stupid am I? But because I can only pass down so many genes, I thought she inherited her beautiful lashes because of her father and he gave her those luscious full lips! She told me she had eyelash extensions and I signed right up before my son’s wedding in June of 2017.

Eyelash extensions will cost you $150.00 for your first trip and I pay $90.00 every 3 weeks for maintenance. This is more expensive than the eyelash serum but I don’t wear mascara or volumizer because these lashes are already doing their job. If you tend to rub your eyes, eyelash extensions are not for you. You can’t pick at your lashes and you need to brush and clean your lashes every week but I spend half the time getting ready because I’m not applying eye makeup!

You can choose how thick or natural you want your eyelash extensions. I have a classic style for my eyelashes because my thinning eyelashes cannot carry the volume of lots of extensions onto an eyelash. I would love a thicker eyelash but I don’t want to look like I’m wearing false eyelashes. I’m more about looking natural not heavily made up.

My make up routine has been cut down to 15 minutes because I no longer need to touch my eyelashes. I add a concealer to hide the puffiness, an eyelash pencil to accentuate my lower eyelid, I rim my lips with a pencil, apply my lipstick, and I apply only blush on my cheeks. Very natural but not overdone.

  1. It certainly seems to have worked. I have used castor oil on my eyebrows and lashes and it definitely works…but you must be diligent..

  2. I am envious of thick, beautiful lashes on other women, and at over 70, mine and my eyebrows have thinned considerably. I won’t be doing the extensions, because the money required at this point in my life, is just not warranted. I’d rather spend my retirement check on clothes and grandkids. I do however, use a serum and see minimal results. Yours are so pretty and yes, your eyes do speak!

  3. Robin, your eyelashes look amazing! Fortunately, I have not experienced a loss of eyelash length or volume yet. But I do love my long thick lashes, so I am not sure what I will do yet when they start to fade! I am grateful for you sharing your experience.

  4. Your eyelashes are lovely Robin! My hair is thinning, my eyebrows are thinning too as well as my eyelashes, why, oh why, can’t I say the same for my mid section? Lol! Thanks for the info!
