Bermuda Shorts Styled with Chambray Shirts

It’s summer and the weather is perfect for shorts.  Even at the age of 63 I still love to wear shorts. Not all women after 50 enjoy wearing shorts but that’s is okay. You need to wear what makes you feel good. My favorite style of shorts is Bermuda shorts because of the longer length.  The long length of Bermuda shorts are perfect for me and I don’t think I look dowdy at all.

Bermuda shorts have been given a bad rap by many women as too hard to style but I think it’s a classic look for women at any age.

Why Bermuda Shorts?

Bermuda shorts are again trending this summer and I have to laugh when I see articles about “Mom shorts.” Why does the length have anything to do with being a Mom? Bermuda shorts were created in Bermuda in 1914 for men as a way to beat the heat. Even Vogue referred to the Bermuda shorts as a “Mom shorts” in this article.

And why the insult to being a certain age?

Bermuda shorts or walking shorts have been popular for a long time and I’ve been wearing them since the ’90s.  The reason I enjoy wearing longer shorts is that I have broken spider veins on my upper legs from years of flying and being pregnant in my 30’s while putting on 50 pounds of baby weight per child. I also have varicose veins that need a little bit of hiding. Bermuda shorts hide so many imperfections and look great dressed up or dressed down for the summer.

Loose Leg or Fitted Bermuda Shorts?

You may prefer a looser leg fit like the paper bag shorts or touser styled shorts that have been trending this summer. I have selected a few that would look great on a woman over 50.

Or perhaps you prefer the fitted tapered leg style that I prefer to wear. These tend to be a longer length.

How to Style Bermuda Shorts with a Chambray Shirt

Because the shorts are long you need to wear your chambray shirt tucked in, knotted in the front, or wear your shirt like a jacket this summer.

For this post, I am wearing my long chambray shirt knotted in the front over a white tee shirt with my favorite floral shorts.  I have also worn it like a jacket. (The versatility of a long-sleeve chambray shirt is worth your investment.)

How I wore my Bermuda shorts at the Cloister in Sea Island

I  wore this sleeveless chambray shirt from Chico’s that is 4 years old with my shorts when I visited the Cloister hotel last summer.  Because it is short in the front I decided to leave it out.  You can also half-tuck a sleeveless shirt instead of tucking it in.

I purchased this shirt because of the button detail on the back.

I find bermuda shorts so good for styling- especially when there’s a color print or pattern. Color selection makes it so much easier to style up with a great top- like you did! Love the chambray so much. You look amazing xx
