Fashion over 50: I'm all Choked Up

I may be a bit late to the party, because I haven’t posted any choker necklaces, but I wore choker necklaces “back in the day” and as with all fashion trends, we recycle them.

When I received this lanyard necklace from Chico’s as a gift for spending lots of money in their store, (which is a monthly habit because the store is next to my hair salon), I got all choked up. Seriously not, but I knew what I was going to do with it when I got home.

It seems lanyards are trending for 2017, but these skinny long strands can get lost on a large print floral top like the one I’m wearing to a victory celebration for my daughter Samantha after a weekend of Special Olympics.

We love to celebrate Sammy’s victories and I love restaurant reservations.

I was ready to cook a wonderful chicken parmesan dinner, but my sweet husband said I did enough this weekend. Volunteering for the Special Olympics State games for two days and supporting our daughter in her victories as an athlete, is the least I can do as a mother, but I have to tell you, I am pooped!

When I saw this leather and jewels necklace it reminded me of the 70’s. The necklace spoke to my bohemian fashion style and said to me,”Where’s your round Versace sunglasses?” Granted they aren’t rose colored, but I can hear Carole King’s Tapestry album in my head right now. This album defined my youth and every song spoke to me.

I am about to celebrate my first born son’s wedding on the same weekend that I married his father 30 years ago. How fitting this songstress and this jeweled leather necklace came into my life.

I am blessed with children and a man who have given me unconditional love and years of endless joy, but forever grateful that this man walked onto my airplane in 1984 and asked me out to dinner in Kansas City.

Call it karma, destiny, or faith; but our paths crossed at the exact time, at the right moment.

“My soul was in the lost and found
You came along to claim it
I didn’t know just what was wrong with me
Till your kiss helped me name it
Now I’m no longer doubtful, of what I’m living for
And if I make you happy I don’t need to do more”-Carole King “(You make me feel a)Natural Woman”

Congrats to your daughter for her participation in the Special Olympics! I wish my sister was alive because I know she would have rocked those competitions so well! Thank you for your help with this wonderful event too!
The choker. I had the thin wire ones back in the day. I could not wear the one you are wearing because my extreme clumsiness would have me doing an Isadora Duncan hack and I would literally choke! But you look beautiful and marvelous!
Best of luck with the wedding and your anniversary!!!!!

You are a knockout!!! I love the choker/lanyard! You really look like you care about yourself and dress any way you want!!! I’m guessing you were a flight attendant? They always look so great. My nephew in Greenville NC is in Special Olympics and there is a Rec Center/gym named after him, the Drew Steele Center. Ok, I’m rambling! Thanks for sharing your style!

You are so very kind and yes, I was a flight attendant “back in the day.”
I left flying the friendly skies in 1988 when Sammy was born. She needed me more.
How wonderful that a rec center was named after your nephew Drew. He must be loved and adored in Greenville!

      Have a wonderful week!

I’m new here by way of Catherine’s blog, and like the way you style clothing from Chico’s. I haven’t been there in a very long time and will make it a point to get there soon!

Congratulations on your daughter’s accomplishments, how wonderful! I have a special needs niece and hope that someday she can take part in events like S O also. It’s amazing to see how their talents shine through during these types of events. We have a lot to learn from them, they are an inspiration to us all! And you sound like a quite a devoted mother too!

I hope your niece will join the Special Olympians!
The parents and coaches are the most caring and wonderful people she will ever meet!
