A Discreet Conversation About Bladder Control

Ladies have you heard of this saying, “I laughed so hard I had tears run down my leg.” It happens to the best of us.

This is a sponsored post with Always Discreet.

Did you know November is Bladder Health Awareness Month? That’s right, and we think it’s time to shed light on the 40 million American women over the age of 40 who are affected by a sensitive bladder. It’s a common experience, yet many women avoid talking about it! Always Discreet was designed with women’s needs in mind. They provide incredible comfort, protection, and discretion and odor control, with a full line of pads, liners, and underwear, specifically made for bladder leak protection available at Walgreens!

I remember my grandmother laughing so hard at a joke, she had to run into the bedroom to change her underwear. We all laughed with her because she was being very honest about her situation. My family has a tendency to laugh really hard and tears flow from our eyes, as well as a tinkle that gets away. While my grandmother experienced bladder leakage, she never let it stop her.

It must run in the family! I am not going to quit having fun and enjoying my life because of worrying about bladder leakage. I am a very active 50ish woman and I know how important it is to me to have a healthy lifestyle. Many of my physical activities do not always have quick access to a bathroom, like long walks on the beach, bike riding in San Francisco, golf, and hiking, so using protection is part of my healthy lifestyle.

I had a wonderful time on Halloween in a golf tournament this year! I always think in the back of my mind not to drink too much coffee before I go out to play golf. We always dress up for Halloween, and this year, we were the Pink Ladies from Grease. (No the cigarettes are not real!) We were even enjoying Bloody Mary’s on Wednesday, which can also cause me to make a quick trip to the bathroom! My partner and I won our flight in the tournament! However, with Always Discreet, I knew I was covered. Which means, double the amount of coffee for stamina during my tournament, an extra Bloody Mary and NO worries about leakage.

On behalf of Always Discreet, bladder health expert Dr. Renee is working to educate women on how best to take care of their bladder. Did you know stress urinary incontinence affects 1 in every 3 adult women between the age of 18-75? It’s nothing to be ashamed of. It happens even to women in the third trimester of their pregnancy. Pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause are major reasons for the increased prevalence of incontinence in women as compared to men. For women over age 60, approximately 23% deal with incontinence.

A recent national survey by Always Discreet found half of the women with bladder leaks admit they affect their personal confidence when they’re doing things they enjoy. When I was approached to do this collaboration with Always Discreet, I didn’t hesitate because of this difficult conversation about bladder control issues. When you have a sensitive bladder, things like dancing, exercising, laughing or even a cough or sneeze can lead to a bladder leak. In fact, eight in 10 women with sensitive bladders experience a tinkle when they cough or sneeze, and 69 percent worry they might smell.

Always Discreet for sensitive bladders provides incredible-performing, discreet protection, with a line of products that feature exclusive technology including, RapidDry™ that absorbs leaks in seconds, Dual LeakGuards™ that help stop leaks where they happen most and OdorLock™ that neutralizes urine odors instantly.

Below are a few ways you can treat bladder leakage but if it’s severe, please consult with your doctor. Don’t be embarrassed if this is happening to you. It’s just another wonderful way of being a woman!

Below are a few methods to treat urinary incontinence from Dr. Renee, a leading bladder health expert, in partnership with Always Discreet.

  •  Kegel exercises – This involves tightening and releasing the pelvic floor muscles Bladder training
    – This is scheduling times to use the bathroom.
  • Quit smoking
  • Acupuncture
  • Quit Caffeine
  • Stay hydrated
  • Cranberry juice is a bladder protective. Use over-the-counter cranberry tablets which have less
sugar than cranberry juice and provide a better concentration of the active ingredient.
  • Slightly acidic urine can discourage infections. Taking vitamin C or drinking barley water can be
easy ways to keep your urine slightly acidic. Use no more than 1000 mg of vitamin C daily.

    Kellyann,

This topic is so uncomfortable for women to talk about but why are all the shelves filled with panty liners and bladder control aids?
Even my daughter in law used Always Discreet when she was pregnant.
It happens to the best of us.

    Hugs,
    Robin

  2. Wow Robin, thanks for bringing up this topic. While my friends and I laugh about this it’s actually pretty serious and something we need to address. I guess we giggle because it’s embarrassing and we’re all in it together! I don’t know a single friend who hasn’t dealt with bladder issues. My doctor asked me about it at my last appointment and I was shocked he brought it up!
