Why Self-Care Beauty Routines Are Important As We Age

Ladies, we spend so much time taking care of others that we tend to put our needs last. We are focused on our family’s wellbeing and tend to forget ourselves even as women over 50! Many of us wait until midlife to begin to focus more on ourselves and our wellbeing. Better late than never I say!

Caring for others is important, but Covid-19 taught us that sometimes, by caring for yourself, you’re caring for others, too. —Becca Kaye, senior care specialist at AvaCare Medical

What is a Self-Care Beauty Routine and why it’s Important after 50

Self-care is anything you do to take care of yourself so you can stay physically, mentally, and emotionally well.

What is Self-Care

Self-care is anything you do to take care of yourself so you can stay physically, mentally, and emotionally well. Practicing self-care does not mean you are choosing yourself over your loved one. It means that you are simply being mindful of your own needs, so you are better able to support the people you care about.

I have often written about exercise and having a daily morning routine as part of my self-care routines after 60. And self-care isn’t just about eating right, exercising, or allowing yourself to take mental health days.

Did you know feeling good about yourself and the way you look is also part of self-care? From a simple beauty routine of putting on makeup every day to skin treatments that address our aging skin. Also going to the hair salon, getting your nails done, or treating yourself to a day at the spa are important parts of self-care.

Feeling good about the way you look and doing things that will make you feel confident and happy are a part of self-care.

Develop a Self-Care Beauty Routine

Developing a self-care beauty routine is about making yourself more of a priority on a day-to-day basis. Whether it’s through makeup, skincare, haircare, or something else entirely, your self-care beauty routine should be something you take pleasure in and enjoy. Your beauty treatments should lift your spirits and help you to self-soothe when you find yourself under stress from daily life. Focusing on caring for your body…maybe even enhancing your outward appearance?

Even if your budget has no room for luxuries like a medspa or an aesthetician, skincare after age 50 is a must!

Beauty Treatments on the Influencers Beauty Tour

This year I had the pleasure of experiencing many different beauty treatments as part of the Influencer Tour for Best Self Atlanta. I was so honored to be chosen and was the oldest picked to meet with beauty and wellness sponsors of the tour. I received 8 complimentary beauty and wellness treatments ranging from manicures & pedicures to Botox.

This was the first time I experienced many new beauty treatments. Like having my hair done at the Blo Buckhead, a blow-dry bar. Have you ever been to one?

It was so fun to have my eyebrows tinted and shaped as well as having my makeup done by a professional makeup artist at Authentic Beauty in Atlanta. I have never tinted my eyebrows before so this was a fun treat!

It was so exciting to receive eyelash extensions at Sweet and Lashful after a year and a half absence. I have written about my experience with eyelash solutions before. Since my eyelashes and hair have thinned because of menopause, having beautiful lashes are very important to me.

As you know I have written about the skincare products that I use on my face. It’s so important to feel good about doing all you can to minimize the signs of aging. Plus your skin will thank you for it!

 Try New Cosmetic Facial treatments

Whether you give yourself a home facial or head out to a spa for cosmetic facial treatments, try to do this at least once a month.

I have already written about my experiences with Diamond Glow Facial and HydraFacial as cosmetic facial treatments that exfoliate and hydrate your skin.

The next 2 cosmetic treatments that I will share with you were interesting and so outside of my comfort level. I have never used Botox or fillers before so why should I start now? Curious to see if these injections make a difference in my appearance. So many women I have talked to swear by micro-needling so I was happy to try it. For many women, having Botox and Juvederm injections is part of their self-care beauty routine. The jury is still out on that one.

Microneedling

I had micro-needling done at Anderson Aesthetics in Alpharetta as part of the Beauty Tour.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure. It involves pricking the skin with tiny sterilized needles. The small wounds cause your body to make more collagen and elastin. Which heal your skin and help you look younger. You might also hear it called collagen induction therapy.

 The Procedure

After cleaning my face, my medical aesthetician, Donna, applied a numbing cream to my face and let it take effect— about 30 minutes.
Then Donna moves a pen-shaped or rolling tool with tiny needles all around my face. The needles make small cuts in your skin, which causes a bit of bleeding. But it wasn’t painful at all. It felt just like the Diamond Glow Facial I had. Donna then applied a hydrating cream to my face. No swelling or downtime.

Botox &  Dermal Fillers

The last beauty treatment I received on the Beauty tour was at the Maloney Center for Facial Plastic Surgery.

I didn’t really know what to expect at this visit but was open to trying anything. What did I have to lose?

First, I had to fill out paperwork about my medical history and the nurse took photos of my face for “Before photos”. Then I had a long conversation with Dr. Brian Maloney about the signs of aging on my face and what he recommended doing at this visit.

He said that in our 60s we lose volume in our face which can contribute to marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and loss of cheek volume. Crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines on the face become deeper and more noticeable. He noticed that my facial skin was “thick” (his terminology) from years of sun exposure which caused many of my wrinkles and lines.

He recommended Botox from my crow’s feet, my deep wrinkles between the eyebrows, and a couple of shots of Botox on my forehead. Because I have marionette lines around my mouth and thin lips, he was going to use Juvederm Voluma.

What my goal was with these injections was to look refreshed, not younger. I only wanted to address things on my face that I don’t like at the age of 64. I would need a lot more work done to my face to erase all my wrinkles. This was dipping my toes into the world of Botox and dermal fillers.

The Procedure

I had numbing cream applied to the areas where I was going to have the injections. Dr. Maloney started with the Botox injections which were completely painless before moving to the Juvederm fillers. Which I must honestly hurt a bit.

I did bruise around my lips from the Juvederm injections and developed a cold sore from the lip fillers. Dermal fillers can trigger an outbreak, which may require you to get an antiviral treatment. Dr. Maloney had asked me about getting cold sores during our discussion and prescribed Valtrex for me.

After the procedure, I was given ice and they wanted me to apply pressure to the treated areas to discourage swelling.

For those of you who want to know how long these injections will last, Botox will last a few months. Juvederm will last between and a year and 18 months.

Do you have a self-care beauty routine that lifts your spirits?

  1. This is interesting and the diff ENT procedures are well explained and documented.

  2. Those eyelash extensions are fabulous! A good self care routine is so important, I get myself ready every day regardless of what I have planned. I do it for me because it feels good to know I have taken care of myself first and then I am able to do what needs to be done for others!
