We believe that traveling knows no age limits. In fact, in my previous article “Exploring the World: Unleashing Adventure for the 50+ Travelers” I encouraged readers to take advantage of their wealth of life experiences by embarking on new adventures. And, since individuals in the 50+ age group have more time and flexibility, this period is a great opportunity to explore the world. A trip to Hawaii is the perfect example of that.

Some of the many reasons why the Aloha State is a top tourist destination include the warm Hawaiian weather, gorgeous sights, and turquoise waters. Now that your kids have left the nest and you’re enjoying your golden years, it’s time to treat yourself to a tropical getaway. Explore my Hawaii travel advice tailored for senior adventurers!

Tips and tricks for traveling to Hawaii at 50+

Rent a car

The island of Oahu is home to the state capital Honolulu and famous sights like Waikiki Beach and the USS Arizona Memorial.

Getting around Honolulu via public transportation is possible but may require a lot of waiting and isn’t very comprehensive. If you plan on visiting areas outside of Honolulu, your best option is to rent a car. Before your trip, we recommend looking for car rentals available at Honolulu Airport so that you can easily pick up your rental as soon as you land. For tourists requiring assistance, the terminals for international arrivals are equipped with Porter Services, who are trained to help you with whatever you may need.

Stay in Kauai for slow travel

Once you hit retirement age, traveling becomes more about personal growth and cultural immersion rather than simply ticking experiences off a list. An article by the AARP highlights that slow travel can be particularly appealing to older tourists wanting to explore a single location more profoundly. Slow travel is all about seeing more by moving less, seeking depth and breadth of experience instead of mileage.

For this, you may opt to stay in Hawaii’s Garden Isle, Kauai. Compared to Maui or Oahu, Kauai doesn’t receive as many tourists. Its peaceful, laid-back atmosphere encourages traveling at a gentler pace with guided tours specifically for seniors. Many resorts on the island also offer wellness programs, spa treatments, and yoga sessions, promoting overall well-being for mature travelers.

Save money by availing of senior discounts

One of the perks of being a senior is all the discounts you’re entitled to, which can be especially useful when traveling. Some airlines even extend discounts to select flights! In Hawaii, there are several establishments that offer senior discounts. From restaurants to theater tickets and even shops like Banana Republic, you can score items at a lower price. Additionally, fees for tourist attractions, museums, and guided tours are sometimes also reduced or even waived, as long as you show them a valid ID. Just make sure to ask about the discounts prior to purchasing.

Bring a companion or two

Traveling is best when you get to share the experience with loved ones, so ask your family or friends to come along on your trip to Hawaii. Doing so can make for an unforgettable family vacation. Plus, it can ease some of the anxiety you may feel about navigating an unfamiliar place. If you decide to turn your Hawaiian getaway into a multigenerational travel opportunity, take the time to create stronger bonds by passing on some of your hard-won wisdom to your children and grandchildren.

Experience comes with age, which benefits travelers over 50. Now, you have a greater grasp of your tastes and travel interests, which makes for more exciting journeys. So, don’t hesitate to set off to lands unknown and use travel as a means to further enrich your life and expand your horizons!

I’ve been to Hawaii three times and always look forward to visiting it again!

Aloha!
