It’s Raining Creepy Men on Instagram, The Musical & Link Up

Ladies, I used to love the song, “It’s Raining Men” but lately I’ve been getting creeped out on Instagram by the men who slide into my DMs and leave me love notes. So I’ve decided that today’s link up will be a musical blog post.

It’s raining creepy men, Oh God, it’s raining creepy men, Ah Hell No
I’m gonna go on Instagram and let myself delete
Absolutely everyone of them
It’s raining creepy men, Ah Hell No
It’s raining creepy men, every specimen
Tall, blonde, dark and fake
Stars and Generals and Princes and Bots

God bless mother nature, she’s a single woman too
She took off to heaven and she did what she had to do
She taught every angel she rearranged the sky
So that each and every woman could find her creepy guy
Oh, it’s raining creepy men, yeah
Humanity’s sinking (humanity’s sinking)
Barometer’s getting low (it’s getting low, low, low, low)
According to all sources (according to all sources)
Instagram is the place to go
‘Cause tonight for the first time
Just about half past ten
For the first time in history
It’s gonna start raining creepy man (start raining creepy men)

I know those of you who are not on Instagram will find this post amusing and may wonder why we ( over 50ish women) continue to stay on Instagram (Here’s a Hint: Millenials work in the marketing departments of all major brands and do not dwell on blogs or Facebook looking for collaborations, hence the need to stay on Instagram for them to see us.) Many women over 50 are having the same problems I have been having recently, it seems it’s raining creepy men everywhere on Instagram. These creepy Romeos DM (direct message) with ill written messages, some as simple as hello, some with blocked images, some are now commenting on my posts ( so do I delete these comments? You know they raise my engagement ratings!), and most recently a few have called me.

What’s a girl to do?

The Block

Yes, you can block your followers and the creepy men who leave you DMs. You will never see them again which really is the best alternative but the creepy men will unfollow you, delete their comments and likes but pop up again later as some other famous or important man who still can’t spell worth a crap. .

The Screenshot and Public Shaming

Here again, you can take a screenshot of the creepy men who are sending you DMs and post them on your Instagram feed as a way to publicly shame them but what would you do if James Franco slides into your DM? James Franco publicly announced later he had used poor judgment hitting on a 17-year-old girl.

There’s no way to turn off the option for someone to send you DMs, but there are some options on the table.

  • Go private. This will give you the space you need and stop the messages and random people coming at you. However, I learned yesterday from women who follow me on Instagram that having a private account hasn’t prevented the creepy men from sending DMs.
  • Turn off DM notifications…out of sight out of mind? This can be done by a quick click in the settings under notifications. However, if you are looking to work with brands, many of them DM you so this could be a tough decision. I actually look through my DMs to see if a brand has reached out to me for a collaboration before I hit the Decline All button.

Restyle Tuesday Outfit

I decided to pull out this poncho top I purchased in 2016 from my closet to wear to the design showrooms today. I had two options of styling it. One style was to tuck it in and pulled through a loop on my white denim skirt.  The other option was to wear it as a scarf.

Here I am in 2016 with my children on Mother’s Day. This photo shows how long the poncho really is.

How are you handling your creepy men? I would love to know!

  1. Yep, I delete those nasty dms and block them! I love your style here. I linked up to you today! So fun! Love your blog, and can’t wait to look around some more. 🙂

The Generals, yes! Where do they all come from? I love it when they say they’ve read my profile and are reaching out. The first line of my profile says Loves: Jesus, My Husband, My Family & Ice Cream. You think that would make it clear. I just say “Thank you, my husband thinks so, too.” to the “You’re beautiful” and similar comments. They generally say nothing else after that. I did block one that was less subtle.

  3. Hi Robin! I’ve gotten notices that a man wants to send me a DM but I just ignore it so I haven’t actullay seen any. To be honest though I’m not super active on IG. There just seems to be no end to creepy men everywhere!

      Kellyann,

Yes Instagram is where the trolls and creepy men dwell but like Debbie said, they’re looking for money.

Thanks for stopping by today my friend!

      Hugs,
      Robin

  4. Robin…the number of creepers has increased recently…so annoying…but I get more on FB! I wonder why..Keep on deleting. I am not great at restyling….need to up my game xx

      Hilda,

I don’t get creepy men on Facebook but I’m perfectly happy not seeing them there too!
You don’t need to up your game friend!
      You are always fabulous!

      Hugs,
      Robin

  5. The whole thing is so ridiculous! Sometimes I go on a blocking spree & other times I just don’t have time for that. I also occasionally respond not too kindly, to the dm’s to call them out & then block them. Did you know that a really high number of them are actually Nigerian money scammers? I kid you not!
I love your creative styling of the poncho top…so pretty!

      Debbie,

I haven’t blocked anyone because I have been on the receiving end recently of being blocked by sisters so I won’t block.
Blocking is great for creeps and stalkers but when you are on the receiving end by women you really liked it’s really sad and insecure. The blocking and deleting every like and comment they ever made was surprisingly childish!

Anyhoo, I agree these men are scammers looking for money.
I love seeing you here today!

      Hugs my friend!

  6. Hi Robin
Haha! I love the song! I usually write goofy songs myself, so it made me laugh.. but the problem is there! I know there are a bunch of lawyers, doctors, military men out there right, invading our IG accounts? The reality I think there are scammers and bots, etc.. and it is annoying! I usually delete and then block some. Appreciate the post.
I LOVE your poncho/top, the colors are brilliant on you! How smart to wear it as a scarf too! The white jeans really bring out the bright colors, lovely !

      Jess,

I have been in a goofy song lyric caption lately on my Instagram so I decided to put one on my post today.
I agree they are probably scammers but I have never replied to any of them.
I always go into their accounts to see if they are legit, most are fake accounts that look very real.
Last month I was getting DMs from Saudi princes! LOL!

      Hugs,
      Robin

  7. I think it is the worst on facebook. But it’s not only creepy men. There are also female internet trolls. However, their comments are different. Most the time it is body shaming like “eat a burger”, “I don’t get what’s great about the look”, “ugly skirt”, “conceal your dark circles”, “terrible hair cut”, etc. I am still not sure which one I find more annoying the guys or the gals. I wish they would make a community of their own and playing their “games” with each other.

      Nicole,

I haven’t experienced the FaceBook problems and I’m sorry people have been mean to you.
I think there’s a whole lot of creepy men and women on social media who need to be deleted.

Thank you for joining my little link up party! I really appreciate it!

      Hugs,
      Robin

  8. Robin, thank you for the out loud chuckle you gave me this morning. It really has been raining creepy men on IG. I just delete the DMs, but leave the comments. Sometimes I even click like on the comments just to be nice? Maybe? I am not sure why I do that??? In any event, if they get too creepy and perverted in comments, then I delete and block. But that has only ever happened once or twice.

As for your brightly colored poncho top, I love it! The colors are brilliant on you and I adore the versatility. I have some poncho tops that I can wear as scarves as well. It is so much fun! I am linking up 2 posts where I restyled some old pieces from my closet.

      Shelbee,

I am glad you had a good laugh. It’s all we really can do with these creepy men of Instagram.
      Just make fun of them.
Even yesterday on my Instagram feed, I was getting lovely comments ( which I don’t delete either) when I was talking about the creepy men.
I guess they can’t read or don’t read captions like a lot of my followers.
Sometimes my captions are better than the outfit!! LOL!

      Hugs always!
      Robin

  9. I am yet to receive a DM from anyone because I am private, but daily get follower requests. They are each quickly deleted. Yes, creepy, very creepy not to mention annoying. Really like the way you styled the colorful poncho. And, what beautiful and handsome children you have.

    1. HelloIm50ish says:

      Libby,

Thank you for sharing you thoughts about Instagram with a private account.
One of the women who follow me on Instagram said she has creepy men DMs and she has a private account.
I cannot be a private account if I want to do collaborations with brands so I need to stay public which is a shame having to deal with the creepy scammers who are looking for stupid women to send them money.

At least the men have been very classy and not crude at all.

Thank you for the lovely compliments too!

      Hugs,
      Robin

Thanks for the info Robin. This creepy men stuff has gotten bad the last month.
    Regan

    1. HelloIm50ish says:

      Regan,

It seems to be the latest problem with Instagram.
At least I swiftly decline all DMs especially with the blocked photo.
Who knows what they would send!
It seems Instagram is the new Tinder but I think most are scammers looking for money.

      Hugs,
      Robin

  11. I block those men…it’s just craziness!!
I added my mom’s creations to the link party–that’s kinda restyling, right??

      Jodie,

Absolutely your mom is the queen of restyling Tuesday!
As for the Creepy men of Instagram, blocking and declining is a lot of work on our part!
We really can’t turn off the notifications because brands contact us this way sometimes if not by email.

      Hugs,
      Robin
