Is Off-the-Shoulder Style Appropriate After 50?

Would you wear off-the-shoulder style after 60 or even 50? I researched how to wear off-the-shoulder tops after 60 for my blog post and stumbled upon another post in which many women commented that women over 60 are too old for off-the-shoulder fashion?

Should We Bare Our shoulders after 50?

I have read many blog posts where women post their comments about appropriate and fashionable for women over 50. Yet, our shoulders are the last thing to age on our body. Have you ever seen a wrinkled shoulder? No. But our necks and decolletage age could be why women think we shouldn’t bare our shoulders after a certain age.

I wore an off-the-shoulder gown for my son’s wedding in 2017 and felt beautiful. If you attend weddings, pay attention to what the women are wearing. Many of the dresses and gowns bare shoulders. Tisk Tisk.

Here’s another off-the-shoulder gown that I wore to my niece’s wedding. Of course, I wasn’t the only one wearing this style at the wedding.

My Off-the-Shoulder Sweater

This boatneck Henley sweater from Saint and Sofia wasn’t meant to be an off-the-shoulder sweater. It just happened to drop off one shoulder. My photographer liked the way I looked and said not to adjust it. She’s in her twenties and thought I looked great this way. I have also worn it without baring my shoulder.

Baring your shoulders is very sexy and stylish for women of any age. Even if you have a less than perfect neck and decolletage, your shoulders look youthful.

Because baring shoulders isn’t a general style women over 50 wear, it will get criticized, especially by other women over 50. I saw comments from women who work out that they wouldn’t bare their shoulders after 50. Why the heck not, I thought to myself? When does baring your shoulders become inappropriate for women over 50?

Summer fashion is full of bare shoulder tops and dresses. Wedding dresses are commonly bare shoulder. It has to do with how much we bare our shoulders and try not to look foolish doing it. If you bare your shoulders, you will need a good strapless bra to hold the girls up. One that you don’t need to keep adjusting. Age has nothing to do with baring your shoulders if you feel confident doing so.

What are your thoughts about baring your shoulders after 50?

I would love to know!

I find it amazing that the idea is even entertained that it is not appropriate..I believe most clothing style looks great if people have the confidence..and it is true women are often the harshest critic of other women .is truly amazing..I love watching the housewives franchise as these confident beautiful women epitomize that U can be older and look great in more revealing clothes..

  2. Your take on this topic is quite refreshing. As long as you’re confident, wear what you feel comfortable with.

  3. You have the most beautiful complexion, shoulders included!! Peaches and cream. And you wear that dreamy blue so well. I am very glad to read this article and to know that I don’t need to purge my OFS tops quite yet. Last week I reorganized my closet and contemplated whether at 63 I dare wear my cold shoulder and off-the-shoulder tops any longer. I put them back in the closet because they are so pretty and make me feel subtly sexy. Glad I made the right decision.

      Thank you Hilda!
Shoulders never age as the rest of our body does!
Even baring a little shoulder is quite sexy and beautiful!

  5. It seems sad that women will criticize others about a fashion style. The funny thing is I wear more OFS tops now than I did when I was younger. Because I feel younger at heart!!!

You are as young as you feel Jodie!
I was shocked to see fit women complaining that we shouldn’t bare our shoulders after 50!
They think we’re trying to look younger! But we’re trying to feel beautiful!
