How to Find Your Effortless Style Over 50

Someone recently came up to me and paid me a lovely compliment. She said I have an effortless style. What exactly is an effortless style?

Effortless style is a look you create because you like the way you look and feel wearing this style. It should reflect your personality. Some people may call it a “Signature style“. Look around you at the women you know or follow on social media. What is it about their style that you find attractive?

How do you develop your own effortless style as a woman over 50?

Dress for You

Your effortless style should represent your fashion taste, personality, and not your age.  Effortless style means dressing for your lifestyle, and looking good while doing it – almost accidentally.

My style is using classic pieces already in my closet and updating them every year with either new accessories or adding a new color to my wardrobe. I purchased this soft khaki-green top because I was looking to add a new color to my wardrobe. It looks wonderful with my camo rope necklace that is over 2 years old. I don’t follow all the trends because many of them don’t appeal to me. For example, I don’t own a pair of ripped jeans or combat boots because they aren’t my taste but many women look good wearing them. Many times trends repeat themselves and you may already have it in your closet!

Less is More

Always dress with just the right amount of accessories so that you don’t come off looking too busy. My effortless style always includes wearing jewelry and accessories. Just the right amount is needed to finish this look.

For instance, I love this silver statement jewelry that I recently purchased because I needed to add more silver-tone jewelry to my wardrobe.

I focus my shopping based on my personal taste not what’s trending.

Invest in Classic Pieces

Carefully craft your style with good quality pieces that can be worn year after year. Classics include your basic white shirt or tee, button-down shirts, and well-fitting pants or jeans.

I own at least 6 white button-down shirts with various sleeve lengths, 6 pairs of jeans with various leg styles, and 4 pants in each neutral color as my basic wardrobe builder.

Also invest in quality blazers lightweight or wool, sweaters in neutral colors, and timeless flats. Trends are great to experiment with but it is imperative to develop your signature style based on what you know to be your true individual and aesthetic identity.

Refresh your wardrobe with something that is trending to update your style

This is where I will tell you to take baby steps in creating your effortless style. Leopard print has been trending for the last 5 years and my closet is full of it. Now trending is snake print and I only purchased booties and flats in snake print.

Big chunky jewelry will always be a good investment and so is a colorful bag. Purchase only in trends that you find appealing to your fashion style.
