Age Defying: Are You Wearing a Bikini After 47?
Ladies, I need a show of hands for this blog post. Are you still wearing a bikini after 47?
Keep your hands up if you’re still wearing a bikini after 60! I have been noticing a lot of wonderful women over 60 who are confidently posting bikini photos of themselves on Instagram and thought this may cause a new conversation. Are you defying age and still wearing a bikini?
My adult children know I wear a 2 piece swimsuit (maybe I shouldn’t, but I do) in the privacy of my own home, but I do not have the confidence or a thin body to post on Instagram wearing my 2 piece swimsuit. I do not want people to publicly judge my 60ish body on whether I am past my prime in wearing a 2 piece.
There is an article I found while googling this post that took a poll and it revealed we must stop wearing a swimsuit at 61? If you still want to wear a bikini after 47 you will be judged for your body shape. Except there are exceptions:
One in two also believe that providing a woman is slim, healthy and attractive into her fifties and sixties, she can “get away with anything.”
Maybe it’s more acceptable for European women to wear a bikini at any darn age, but we Americans like to judge and comment on what we think is age appropriate.
Dame Helen Mirren was wearing a red bikini at 63 but I’ve seen photos of her body when she wasn’t posing and the paparazzi caught her off guard in a swimsuit and her body made me smile. She has a less than perfect body but she is a very confident woman at her age. If she wants to wear a bikini or a swimsuit she will bloody well wear what she wants! (I think she’s a terrific actress and I won’t post the less than flattering images of her here on my blog post.)
Helen Mirren at 63Even Helen said it was a flattering post because she said she doesn’t look this good. It was all about the angle and the sunlight, yet she looked wonderful.
This photo was taken when I was 40. I had no problem wearing a bikini in public because I knew I had the body to wear a bikini. I have always preferred a high waist bottom with a high cut leg.
Wearing a bikini should be about what’s appropriate for your body, not your age. If a woman has the confidence to wear a bikini at 47, or after 60 let’s judge her.
I still enjoy wearing a 2 piece but now I wear a cute little skirt with a top. I feel more comfortable in a skirt bottom than a bikini bottom. My chest has ballooned since menopause and my legs have veins on them, but I want to wear a flattering 2 piece. (It’s been raining this week so I have to shoot this swimsuit inside but this is what I wear to the beach in Hilton Head.)
Yes, I know some of you may think I shouldn’t be wearing a 2 piece because it’s not appropriate for my age. Wear what you feel comfortable in. Wear what looks good on you. And for goodness sakes, if you are over 50 and can sport long hair, a ponytail, a bikini or a swimsuit, leather pants, and stilettoes…Rock on sister! You can join my newly formed 0 for 6 Club! You may have to start your own club if you are still wearing everything you’re not supposed to wear after 47 on the study done by Jezebel magazine! Then I am not worthy!

What are you wearing that is age-defying my friends?
I would love to know!
Hugs,
Who’s wearing the suit? Thats what matters. I dislike wearing one pieces for many reasons, aways have done, and probably always will! 54 and still rocking the bikini and no I definitely don’t have a bikini bod, I just don’t care what someone else might think.
Robin, I think you look fantastic in your two piece! I think any woman will look great in anything she wears with confidence! Let’s continue to decide for ourselves what we love to wear!
You look fabulous so go for it! I wear a two piece at 50 (the top is a tankini and the bottom is a skirt) because for the life of me I cannot find a one piece that accommodates my large chest. I have loved wearing a swim skirt for years, I am so much more comfortable! Great topic Robin!

I just wore my leopard bikini from Victoria’s Secret last week at age 63 (at the beach with my husband.) I felt great because I’m still in shape (and I use Dermablend on my legs.) Just too shy to post my picture on Instagram in it. Lol!
Morning Robin!
I love both of your swimsuits on you! I still can’t get over your gorgeous pool! ( next house for us, will have one 🙂 ) I have always been one to think whatever makes a woman confident and comfortable in herself is what she should wear. I wear both a bikini and a one piece and really don’t think of age limit with swimsuits .and those articles, stop wearing a bathing suit at 61, that is like the jean article that women should stop wearing denim at 43.. who comes up with these arbitrary numbers ?
Have a great weekend!

Robin, love your post. I nearly posted a pic of Helen Mirren too. We were writing on the same lines. We will wear what we like and we applaud everyone’s right to do so. Chat soon my friend…. xxxx
When I was young I was so critical of my body and never felt comfortable in a bikini. Then I started vacationing down south at 52 and saw many women wearing bikinis and being so at ease I thought why not? I’ve always taken care of myself physically and I was finally ready to bare myself literally! It felt so good to be happy with my body and at 63 I still wear a bikini!
You look great, Robin! Yes, I wore a bikini between 55 and 60, but I was in Europe and the Caribbean, where no one is as body-obsessed as we are in the States. I haven’t even worn a swimsuit since I returned to the U.S., but I have a couple of tankinis in case the situation warrants.
Robin, once again you’ve started us talking with another great post!
Speaking for myself, I enjoy wearing a one piece because I feel that it is the most flattering for my body type. I have been blessed with my Granny Lucy’s little round buda belly and no waist since I was a child. Like you I too have worn high waist two piece suits. Now days I feel more confidient in a one piece with interesting details around the neck or back area. In short, I’m with you…wear what you like…it’s always best to wear what is most flattering…and age has nothing to do with it…it’s all about you and your body. If you have a bikini body…by all means wear one if you want!
You look wonderful! I enjoyed wearing a two piece until I had my daughert and my tummy wasn’t smooth any more. I set out to find the most flattering one piece swimsuits I could find and it’s been fun. I’m glad we are pushing the rules and finally doing what we want. Hugs, Nina
Nina,
It seems this was a wonderful topic to be discussing with women over 50!
Many women wear swimsuits they feel comfortable in and age has nothing to do with it!
We should do another fashion disrupter soon!
Hugs,
Robin
no because of the sun and sun damage
if you have no issues with that why not
Isabella,
Those are very good reasons not to wear a swimsuit or a bikini.
I appreciate you mentioning that issue.
Yes, if we love the sun and wear sun screen to protect our skin we should be able to wear what we feel comfortable wearing at any age.
Hugs,
Robin
