My friends, with the holiday season in full swing and winter weather knocking at our door, this can be a very stressful time of year with all the ho ho ho’s added on top of your everyday stress. Do you have a perfect relaxation space in your home?

According to new research by interior design specialists Inspired Wallpaper, 50 percent of us don’t think we get enough time for ourselves. This can lead to stress, burnout, and even depression.

How does your home make you feel? Is it a sanctuary away from the chaos or do you dwell in chaos? If your life seems hectic and out of control, why not create a private retreat where you can go to unwind, read, and take sanctuary from the hectic outside world? You need to learn to turn off your switch and allow yourself some “me time.”

If you need a place to get away to do what you love, make it happen! A private space doesn’t have to be small, but it does have to be furnished with your favorite things. Create an area of your home dedicated to switching off and unwinding – and you don’t even have to carve out a room, it could be a small reading corner.

Recently I had the honor of participating in a designer showhouse and I created a private retreat for an imaginary woman who wanted her own private retreat. This was a room that contained art and cherished books of her recent travels to Italy. I didn’t fill the room with lots of decorative items because clutter can cause stress. I wanted this space to be serene and calming to sit in. Lots of natural light and plants filled this room. I kept the art to a  minimum to reduce wall clutter. Your eyes need to rest in a space you plan as your relaxation space.

Have you heard of the term Hygge Decor?

Hygge is a Danish word that can be best described as enjoying life’s simple pleasures. It was created as a concept and lifestyle by the Danish in the 18th century and is now a fundamental part of their culture. … The main idea of hygge decor is to create a peaceful, serene space that is free of clutter.- HyggeHouse

6 Tips to Create your Relaxation Space

You can create a more comforting relaxing space, by gradually implementing these small changes into your home.  You can start by focusing on a few corners of the house.

  • Remove the Clutter

To get a handle on it, first, minimize the clutter by getting rid of what you don’t need. Next, file any papers that you need to hold on to. For random things that you’re not quite sure what to do with, throw them in covered decorative bins, baskets, drawers, etc.

  • Let the Natural Light in

Natural lighting works best and will give you a Vitamin D boost, which can help with your muscle and bone health. If you have gorgeous views of water or landscaping do not cover up your windows. Bring in as much natural light and nature into your home.

  • Surround yourself with things that you Love

Set aside an area to relax that contains only personally meaningful items, such as family photos, photos or art of your favorite places or travels.  Add in a comfy chair, a well-loved blanket and a book you can’t wait to read.  Furnish your new space with super soft and cozy fabrics to really help you unwind after a hard day’s work.

  • Make one area in your home a quiet place to relax and unwind.

Add a sitting area in your bedroom with comfy furniture where you can curl up with a good book and unwind. Position your chair or chaise so that you can look out a window. Spend some time getting the view just right.  Place a small table next to the comfortable chair or chaise like I did for my client, one that is just big enough for a book, a cup, or a glass of wine and a table lamp. Don’t be tempted to put anything else on the table.  Floor lamps are wonderful if you end up purchasing a small table that isn’t big enough to hold a lamp.

  • Create an area that is an electronics-free zone.

Have one room that is cozy and inviting that doesn’t have a television in it. Today more than ever we need to turn off the television and learn to appreciate the quietness of wonderful conversations and connect with the people we love while not looking at our phones, computers, or television to see if we missed anything. I remember years ago of being horrified by the phones at the dinner table because our children needed to connect with their world through social media. I see an increase in the need for keeping a room in our homes electronics free in 2019 because so many us work from home and we are always working.  If you have a room that is electronic free you are not allowed to use your phone or even look at it. When was the last time you went to a wedding or funeral when a phone interrupted the service? We have become a society that is too accessible.  We answer emails 24/ 7, (I am guilty of that) and we talk to clients on days we don’t work.  We should not be accessible to our clients or the companies we work for 24 hours a day.  Okay, I’m ranting but this is why my clients are looking for relaxation spaces in their homes.

  • Surround yourself with Nature.

Place flowers or a plant on a table to harness those natural elements.  In my designer showhouse woman’s retreat, I had flowers on every table.

  1. Natural light is so important! I would do things so differently if I ever get the chance to build another house. Clutter is my arch enemy – I am constantly trying to get rid of things, my husband however has a very different approach! Gorgeous spaces!

  2. I agree with all these tips. I need to declutter – that’s the problem when you have been married for so long – you can accumulate so much! I have started buying flowers each week – and they bring me so much joy. The photos are so inspiring – love each and every image! xx Maria
