The start of a new year often means setting personal goals to work towards, with most revolving around health and fitness. However, there are more aspects of your life that you can improve, like your living space. Especially now that spring is here, it is the perfect time to refresh your home and add bright touches for a new season. Whether you want to experiment with a new trend or make your Pinterest board come to life, here are several ways to revamp your home this year. Not sure where to start? Here are a few ideas that I suggest as an interior designer to liven up your space in 2022.

5 Ways to Refresh Your Home in 2022

1. Revamp Your Decor

Interior design trends are constantly changing, which means there are endless possibilities to refresh your home. Do you want to add a pop of color? Incorporate more earthy, neutral tones? Or maybe you want to channel some 70’s inspiration into your space. Whatever style you choose, there are many ways to revamp your decor to create a brand new look. To start, you should determine what kind of aesthetic you want to achieve in your home – the last thing you want is to have too many clashing styles! If you’re unsure, ask yourself how you want to feel when you walk into your space. Do you want to feel relaxed? Cozy? Luxurious?

Depending on your design goals, your home decor choices will vary. For instance, if you’re looking to feel invigorated in your space, you might opt for an accent wall or some fun, printed wallpaper. Whereas incorporating more subdued colors and nature-inspired decor may be a better fit if you want to feel more tranquil.

Whatever you decide, getting new decor can liven up your space. Simple changes like swapping out old towels, replacing your throw pillows, and changing your window treatments can make a big difference. If you’ve been using the same furniture, rugs, or wall art for years, replacing them with some fresh style and better functionality may be time. If you’re on a budget, try buying secondhand or lightly-used furniture for a new look, or try to restore your current pieces. Flipping thrifted pieces and making do-it-yourself wall art has been increasingly popular, and there are plenty of tutorials online for some inspiration.

2. Add a Fresh Coat of Paint

Many people often underestimate the impact that a simple coat of paint can have on the look of your home. Whether you want to add a fresh layer or experiment with a new color palette, painting your walls can instantly refresh your space. Color trends are constantly changing, but try to align your wall color with the overall style of your home. For instance, if you’re going for a bolder design, you might choose more vibrant colors like deep blue, hunter green, or Fuschia. However, if you want a more relaxed style, more muted and pale colors might be a better choice.

You can also choose colors to boost your mood, which can be especially helpful if you don’t get much natural light in your home. Colors can be inspiring; for example, blue can have a soothing effect, yellow can make you more cheerful, and purple can enhance creativity. If you want a more timeless look, opt for more neutral colors like light beige, gray, or cream tones that are more versatile.

3. Renew Your Lighting

Updating your light fixtures can also make a big difference in your home. Like the decor, light fixtures can influence the style of your space and can become a focal point or statement piece. Especially if your home lacks natural light, incorporating more lighting can bring some much-needed brightness into your room. Depending on the design you want to achieve, there are several lighting options.

You can go for a bolder approach with a chandelier or a more subtle look with a classic mount light. You can also incorporate standing and table lamps to complement your furniture and other decors for overhead lighting. If you don’t need new fixtures, you can use backlighting to enhance countertops, shelves, staircases, and more to give your space an elevated feel. Whatever style you choose, consider switching your current bulbs to LEDs for increased brightness and sustainability.

4. Rearrange Your Furniture

Refreshing your home doesn’t need to be expensive and complicated. You can achieve a new look simply by rearranging your current furniture and pieces. You’d be surprised how much a simple layout redesign can help transform your space! For larger areas like the living room, try playing around with different positions and swapping your furniture between rooms. If, for example, you’ve always had your couch pushed up against the wall, bring it out a bit to give it some breathing room (this can also make your space feel bigger!).

When experimenting with different furniture arrangements, consider creating conversation areas and monitoring the traffic flow. While you don’t want people tripping over your pieces because they’re too close together, you also want to ensure people can comfortably talk to each other without yelling or leaning in too much. It’s all about finding balance! If you’re unsure where to start, interior designers can help you determine which layout works best for your needs and space.

5. Make Essential Upgrades

Sometimes updating your decor isn’t enough to refresh your home. Depending on your needs and design goals, making home renovations may be what you need to liven up your space. For example, remodeling your kitchen or bathroom can instantly freshen up your home and give it new life, as these are high-traffic areas used frequently throughout the day. If you need some extra space, consider finishing a basement or attic and converting it into an office space or playroom to fit your needs. Creating these spaces can make your life easier and give your home more purpose and use! You can also make more cosmetic renovations to revamp your living space. For example, replacing your carpets with hardwood flooring or installing a backsplash in your kitchen are simple but effective ways to transform the look of your home.

While renovations are an investment, they can provide long-term benefits and increase your home’s value. Before starting these projects, you’ll want to make a budget to determine what you can afford and to ensure you’re not overspending. If you’re a homeowner, you can research how to get a home equity loan and how it can help fund these renovations and other updates to your home. This can be a smart financing option for these projects since it has a lower interest rate than a personal loan or credit card, and you can deduct the interest when used for home improvements. No matter what renovation you choose, make sure to plan and consider how these upgrades will improve the look of your home!

I hope you found these tips to refresh your home helpful.
