Food for Thought: Brain Food/Link Up
Ladies, do you ever think about what foods are good for your brain?
There are literally millions of recipes online if you want to lose weight, shed belly fat, reduce carbs, or go gluten-free.
But if you want to eat right for your brain, there are some food items that are specified with brain health in mind.
When I started to do research for today’s Wellness Wednesday food for the brain I found many items that were listed as brain food. This month for Wellness Wednesday Nina and I are focusing on healthy mornings.
Breakfast seems to be the best mealtime to add brain healthy foods to your diet. That means eating a brain-healthy breakfast not sugary carbs for breakfast. Eating a bad breakfast, or no breakfast at all, can leave you mentally foggy, unable to focus, and even feeling anxious or depressed.
Coffee
Two main components in coffee — caffeine and antioxidants — help your brain. Coffee can help boost alertness and mood. It may also offer some protection against Alzheimer’s, thanks to its caffeine and antioxidants. So enjoy your cup of coffee because it’s good for you!
Eggs
Eggs are a good source of several nutrients tied to brain health, including vitamins B6 and B12, folate, and choline. Choline is an important micronutrient that your body uses to create acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and memory.
Blueberries, Oatmeal and Almonds(The Super Trio)
Blueberries are one of the best foods you can eat to improve your brain health. Blueberries prevent oxidative stress that may lead to neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Blueberries also improve memory and motor skill functioning.
Adding blueberries and almonds to oatmeal is a wonderful super trio brain meal. This super trio is also good for keeping your heart healthy.
When it comes to brain food, oatmeal is among the top recommendations from health and fitness experts. Eating well contributes to brain longevity as well as short-term benefits like learning new test material and performing well when tested. Oats are good for your brain for numerous reasons.
Eating nuts like walnuts or almonds for breakfast help to keep your brain sharp. Several nutrients in nuts, such as healthy fats, antioxidant, and vitamin E, may explain their brain-health benefits.
I hope you’re thinking about food that will help your mind stay healthy but I know our brains need to stimulate as well as we age. Crossword puzzles, card games with your friends, and getting exercise also helps our brains stay young. As I have mentioned in previous wellness Wednesday posts about menopause, you need to also improve your diet, lower your cholesterol, stop eating sugary foods, and keep a positive attitude on life.

Hugs,
That definitely made me think about my breakfast! So two out of five is what I am eating. Always drinking coffee and always eating eggs! I need to go back to eating oatmeal and blueberries I do eat from time to time. Having a healthy mind is so important. I love that food can help with their wellness.

Hehe- Hilda made me laugh! I know red wine has antioxidants, so I am going with that!
Hi Robin,
I drink mainly 2 cups of coffee in the morning, the rest of the day it’s water or tea. I could eat more eggs. i do really like eggs, often I am eating a good cereal in the morning, yogurt and fruit. My mom is a big oatmeal person.
A positive attitude makes a big difference in life!
Have a great day!

Jess,
It’s so funny but my mother loves oatmeal too!
Outmeal is so good for us but we tend to associate it with colder temperatures.
Coffee always keeps me in a positive mood!
HUgs,
Robin
I try to be good and eat a varied diet and look after body and brain. I need to cut down on wine and gin!
Hilda,
Yes breakfast is so important for us. I love eggs and a bowl of berries for breakfast.
Red wine has it’s benefits in moderation for our heart but we definitely don’t need the calories!
Hugs,
Robin
