What GLP-1 Taught Me About Healthy Aging as I Approach 70

As I approach my 70th birthday this year, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it really means to age well.
For years, I thought being healthy meant weighing less. Like many women, I believed that if I could just lose the weight, everything else would fall into place.
But this past year changed my perspective.
My Wake-Up Call

My journey began with a wellness consultation at LumiVita, where I had an advanced blood panel and body scan. I went into the appointment thinking we would simply talk about the benefits of joining LumiVita.
Instead, I received news I wasn’t expecting.
I was borderline prediabetic.
Hearing those words was a wake-up call.
Suddenly, this wasn’t about fitting into a smaller dress size. It was about protecting my future health.
I realized I didn’t want to wait until diabetes—or another chronic condition—became my reality before making meaningful changes.
Why I Chose a GLP-1
That’s when I decided to begin a GLP-1 medication under my healthcare provider’s guidance at LumiVita.
I’ll admit, I hoped it would do more than help me lose weight. I thought it might also improve my blood pressure and cholesterol.
What I’ve learned is that while the medication is an incredible tool, it isn’t a magic solution.
It taught me something much more valuable: discipline.
The medication helped quiet the constant thoughts about food, but it was still up to me to decide what I put on my plate and how I cared for my body.
I’ve learned that if I want to improve my overall health—not just the number on the scale—I have to do the work.
Changing My Priorities
Today, my priorities look very different.
I focus on eating enough protein to nourish my body and preserve muscle.

I drink plenty of water every day.

I make strength training a priority.

I include cardio because my heart health matters just as much as my waistline.

Those habits have become far more important to me than chasing a certain number on the scale.

Strength Is My New Goal
One of the biggest lessons this journey has taught me is that muscle matters.
As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass, and a GLP-1 can make preserving it even more important.
That’s why I’ve committed to strength training—not to look younger, but to stay stronger.
I want to continue golfing, skiing, paddleboarding, traveling, carrying my own luggage, and keeping up with my grandchildren.
Strength gives us independence.
And that’s something worth working for.
Investing in My Future

While spending the summer in Park City, I started working out at Smart Fit Method to take my strength training to the next level.
Before beginning, I completed a complimentary health assessment that included a body composition scan and a VO₂ assessment, which measures cardiovascular fitness.

One of the most encouraging things I learned was that my metabolic age is 62.
That’s seven years younger than my chronological age—but what really motivated me was learning that I can improve it even more.
By strength training three to four times each week and continuing regular cardio, I can lower my metabolic age even further.
That isn’t about vanity.
It’s about giving myself the best chance to stay healthy, active, and independent for decades to come.
The Biggest Lesson

When I started this journey, I thought a GLP-1 would change my body.
Instead, it changed my mindset.
It taught me that healthy aging isn’t something that happens automatically.
It’s built through the choices we make every single day.
The medication is one tool.
The real transformation comes from eating well, prioritizing protein, drinking enough water, building muscle through strength training, taking care of my heart with cardio, and staying committed to the life I want to live.
As I enter this next decade, I’m no longer chasing a smaller number on the scale.
I’m chasing strength.
I’m chasing health.
I’m chasing energy.
Most of all, I’m chasing the opportunity to enjoy every adventure, every trip, every golf game, and every moment with the people I love.
Because that’s what healthy aging means to me.
