Summer Skincare Routine For Women Over 50

Our skin changes with age – it’s inevitable. I’ve found it’s more important than ever, now that I’m over 50, to have a good skincare routine so that I can look and feel my best. From my tips to give your skin a fresh, youthful glow this summer, to why you should use a dermatologist-recommended deodorant, here are 6 tips for your summer skincare routine.

Summer Skincare Routine

1. Remember to cleanse your face daily.

I’m sure it’s not news to you that washing your face every day is essential for us women in our 50s, especially in the summer. Of course, we don’t want to strip our beautiful skin of its natural oils. Since more mature skin like ours can be prone to becoming a little dry and irritated, I recommend opting for a mild, non-irritating cleanser. I find lukewarm water is best for a post-cleanse rinse, and I always finish up by patting my skin dry with a soft cloth.

2. Be sure to give your skin some gentle exfoliation.

Exfoliating is a great way to achieve a bright and youthful look when you’ve got more mature skin. Be mindful, however, of the fact that our skin is thinner and more delicate than it used to be. I recommend only exfoliating a maximum of once or twice a week. Use a gentle scrub to buff away those unwanted dead cells and freshen up your skin for that extra youthful glow this summer.

3. Wear as little make-up as possible.

On warm, summer days, adding an extra layer to our skin with make-up can cause a lot of discomfort. Even us glorious, golden women are prone to sweat. Sweating under make-up can make it run, which is never a good look on anyone. You don’t have to completely ditch the make-up, but I recommend embracing the season and toning it down to allow your skin to breathe. On the days you do add a little make-up to your routine, be sure to choose a lightweight product, in particular those that are cream or gel-based. In addition, look for products with SPF which will add an extra layer of protection from the sun.

4.Always apply sunscreen.

Once you hit your 50s, you know you’re going to have to embrace signs of aging, but that doesn’t mean we have to help those signs along. Wearing good quality sunscreen (I recommend SPF30 or higher) is protect you from premature aging, which can lead to skin cancer.

5. Apply deodorant every day.

I know we don’t like to admit it, but the older we get the more our body odor changes. Just because we get a little hotter and sweatier in the summer (and let’s be honest, during menopause too), doesn’t mean we have to hold back! Using a dermatologist-recommended deodorant is my simple way to ensure I smell and feel fresh at all times.

6. Don’t be afraid to cover up.

I know using the right products and looking after your skin with the right care is important, but sometimes the best skin care is to make sure it’s covered. The right hat (like the black trim sun hat I featured in my ‘Getaway Chic Style from Chico’s post!), a lightweight jacket, or maxi-dress are ideal ways to look great and give your skin a break from the summer sun.

It’s so easy to look and feel good in the summer sun with the right wardrobe, hair care and skin care tricks up your sleeve. I hope you have a few new ideas to keep your beautiful older skin in the best condition this summer.

Until next time!
