Cozy Chic Style for January Weather
It’s January and the temperatures are dropping. Sometimes, winter calls for us to put our heads before our hearts and choose trusty, weather-appropriate clothing rather than valuing fashion above everything. Today I am joined with my fellow blogging sisters from around the world as we share our cozy style for our January weather.
Since you all know I live in Atlanta our weather fluctuates from low 30’s to 60’s in January. Therefore I have many different looks for staying cozy and warm in January.
However, when the weather turns colder and multiple layers become mandatory as opposed to an option, we start to run out of cute cold weather outfits real quick.
But guess what? Just because it’s freezing out, doesn’t mean we have to collectively resign ourselves to giving up on style—it just means we all have to think a bit more creatively when getting dressed for the cold weather!
Invest in a Few Different Coats
January weather can have me going from vests to my full-length cashmere coat bet you have different coats and jackets for your hometown weather. My closet is full of different wraps, vests, jackets, and coats because the weather is so unpredictable. Some of you may just be in a cold zone, while I know most of you will experience in the coldest weather in January. I am not including snow boots or parkas in this post. I will save it for my Park City post later on how to look styling in the snow!
Capes, Blanket Wraps, and Vests
Cold weather is always about adding layers and staying warm. For milder winter weather you can get away with a vest or wrap as your extra layer. Capes are also very popular.
This cape is from Peach and I wrote about it last October. Read more
I will love wearing this cape in January. Capes are a wonderful investment because you can wear them from fall to spring.

Blanket wraps or ruanas are another way of adding a warm layer. I have 2 in my closet and wear them on days that are in the 50’s and 60’s. For instance, today is going to be 60 degrees and my blanket wraps are a perfect layer for work or running errands.
I actually pin my wraps to create a poncho or belt them for a cape style.
I love this leopard print reversible ruana and it appeared here on a blog post in 2018.
When looking for a winter weather wrap make sure that it’s heavy enough to keep you warm on mild January days. You can even use them over your wool coat as a chic winter fashion!

Faux and real fur vests have been so popular for the past few years and will always look stylish for those of you living in the south. If you live up north fur vests can be an extra layer of warmth but perhaps not used as outerwear My faux fur vest is really comfortable and is perfect for work or travel. This faux fur vest has been featured many times in my blog posts. Here’s a good one.

To Wear Fur or Not to Wear Fur
This is a topic many people feel particularly strong about. Do you wear real fur or not? Times have changed from when everyone wanted to own a mink coat as a status symbol to the 90’s when animal rights activists started throwing red paint at women on the streets of New York wearing fur coats. Perhaps it’s not that surprising, really. In the last few years, the anti-fur movement has gathered speed, prompting a seismic shift in the fashion world and the popularity of faux fur has made wearing a “Furlike garment” acceptable again.
We’ve become more aware of the cruelty of animals we eat, wear, or pro-animal rights, I always wanted a full-length mink coat but my husband was against purchasing one for me and he ended up buying the mink trimmed green cashmere coat you will see next. In the last 5 years, I’ve seen more and more wonderful faux fur fashions that I seldom wear my mink stole that I won 10 years ago at a charity event because I know the social implications of wearing real fur. I also wear leather and eat meat, so I am sure I will hear from someone that I’m a despicable human being for wearing real fur.
So is cruelty-free faux fur the environmentally sound antidote? The answer isn’t that simple.
We could talk about the toll on the environment that synthetic fur takes compared to natural fur, or the communities around the world who have supported themselves for generations through the fur industry, or the importance of preserving the incredible savoir-faire and craftsmanship of fur artisans, but ultimately, it all comes down to a question of choice. We’re living in a time in which choice and inclusiveness is everything. As an individual, you might find it difficult to navigate this very sensitive landscape.
You consider yourself an animal rights supporter and you don’t buy fashion from unethical brands, but there it is, a real fur coat hanging in the back of your closet perhaps it’s been handed down by a relative or in my case, I outbid another woman at a charity event for my knitted mink stole.
Hats and Gloves
Everyone is scared of getting hat hair, but if you want to stay warm and fashionable when outside in winter, a hat is key. You lose 40 to 50 percent of your body heat through your head so it really makes sense to keep it as warm as possible. It means you can wear fewer layers on the rest of your body and avoid that bundle-of-washing feeling.
This buffalo plaid wrap has been my favorite pice to wear because I can style it in so many ways. I love wearing it with my fur headband and fur-trimmed gloves or wear it like a poncho. ( I pinned it.) The fur-trimmed headband doesn’t cause hat hair and it really keeps my head warm! Hats and gloves are a must in cold weather and I have always purchased fur-trimmed gloves for a touch of style in the cold weather.

Puffer Jackets
My little yellow reversible puffer jacket is probably the most complimented jacket I have worn since last winter. I wore it to New York last Valentine’s Day and people were constantly stopping me and asking me where I got it. Unfortunately, Soft Surroundings doesn’t carry it anymore, but I’ve linked a few of my favorite puffer jackets.
Long Coats
When it comes to stylish outerwear that’s actually warm, nothing can compare to a classic wool coat. Once the temperatures dip below 40 degrees I pull out my faithful full-length cashmere and mink coat that is over 30 years old. My coat covers me from head to foot and it’s so warm. Long wool coats and down-filled puffer coats are perfect for sub-freezing temperatures because they cover you up so well.

Lastly, just remember that safety is always more important than fashion. While it is possible to be chic and warm, very low temperatures can be a health hazard, so it’s better to sacrifice your fashion sense temporarily than risk a trip to the hospital. I wear hat gloves, and boots with great traction on the soles to prevent slipping when the temperature gets too cold and dangerous!
Let’s check out my wonderful blogger friends and see what they’re wearing in the area where they live in the world.
Cindy of Cindy Scurry lives in Denver Colorado where it’s always cold but sunny in January.
Hilda of Over the Hilda lives in Ireland and it can be a little cold but rainy. No snow but some cold north winds at times.
Andy of Pearls and Pantsuits lives in northwest Louisiana, where our weather is whatever it wants to be! It’s 71 degrees as I type this! The next few months will probably be rainy and cool, but who knows? Not even the weatherman!
Emma of Style Splash lives in the UK – currently living in Cheshire in the North West. The weather here has been mild and wet so far over Winter but we often get a cold spell in January/February.
Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style lives in the Netherlands. We have grey winters, with less sun and a lot of rain. Normally it’s about 5 degrees Celcius in Winter. We perhaps will have about 7 days of snow. Which are 7 days to much for me!
Julie of Fashion Trends and Friendslives in Sugar Grove, Illinois (about 60 minutes west of Chicago). It’s usually pretty cold and snowy in the winter although we’ve had some warm 40’s and 50’s.
Nicole of High Latitude Style lives in Alaska. Her winter is 7 months long and can have anything from around the freezing point to way below -40F or -40C. BRRRRR!!!
Suzanne of Asksuzannebell lives in Los Altos, a town located in Northern California (much different weather than Southern California). We live in the heart of Silicon Valley, 5 miles from Palo Alto and Stanford University.
We have year-round mild weather. I like to say we have 2 seasons…cold and hot. We can get bouts of rain (last snow was when I was in second grade), but as you can see in my photo, a light coat is really all you need – unless you head to San Francisco or the Coast. We all have puffer vests and puffer coats around here.
Nina of Sharing a Journey lives in Florida.
The winters are very mild and temperatures fluctuate between 50 and 80. We have a few colder days in January. Only people who live in Florida bundle up and wear jackets in the winter. The tourists wear shorts and flip flops no matter what!
What type of outerwear do you wear in January? I would love to know what your weather is like too!

Love coats! I have more than I need in (Charlotte) but would still love a timeless camel coat. Your faux fur vest looks wonderful with the scarf. I also love the plaid and different ways you styled it. I wish I liked hats on me, as I hate it when my ears get cold and hurt. Love the hat on you!
Have a great weekend!

These are all very stylish as well as cozy, thanks for sharing and hosting. Jacqui x
Robin, I love all of your outerwear options! The plaid capes and ponchos are my favorite! Living in an arctic place, I have quite an extensive outerwear wardrobe myself. Because I like my coat to go with my outfit! As for faux fur vs real fur, real fur just kind of freak me outs, so I stick with faux fur! But I don’t really see any harm in vintage furs because the damage has already been done. Now brand new fur coats being manufactured from currently operating fur farms, I don’t think I can get on board with that. However, I also am a firm believer in “to each his own.” Great post! Thanks for linking up.

Great coat wardrobe. Your yellow puffer vest is really a big statement and the star of your outerwear wardrobe. So chic! Great outfit suggestions for outerwear. There is no winter wardrobe boredom possible. 😉

You have a wonderful collection of coats and wraps. I agree with you about the moral and ethical dilemma regarding fur. It’s a minefield.
I love how each of you is so different in your definition of cozy chic style. Even here in AZ…it’s been chilly and I’ve had to pull out the coats and sweaters.
XOXO

Hi, Robin – Happy New Year! I’ve been vegetarian for 47 years and care about what people do to animals. I am horrified at the thought of having an animal killed to provide a fur or animal-skin item of clothing for me. But I have a real fur coat that I bought from a second-hand store ages ago. What I am meaning to say is that I believe it’s okay to buy real fur if it was already there and used by someone else, but I would not buy one brand new and be the person to pay those who killed that animal. I hope this helps others to feel better about enjoying real fur without having to feel the guilt. XOXO, Angie – http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com
Oh, man! What I’d give for 60-ish temps in January! We’re being pelted by the usual monsoon and localized flooding here on the Olympic Peninsula. Think Noah. More snow due by the end of the week. I’m liking Nicole’s AK look! Especially the hood and boots!
I absolutely love love love these outerwear styles! I am a jeans and turtleneck kind of woman but I love to throw on a nice Long coat, cape or shawl to give the outfit some spunk. Thanks for sharing this!
