Aging Authentically After 50: Redefining What It Means to Look Good at Any Age

Aging Authentically: What Does That Really Mean?

Is there a “right” way to grow older?

Not long ago, someone said to me, “You look good for your age.”

I know it was meant as a compliment, but it got me thinking.

What does that actually mean?

Does it mean you look younger than your birth certificate suggests? Does it mean you’ve had cosmetic procedures? Is it about great skincare, healthy habits, or simply good genes?

Or does it mean you’ve learned to embrace who you are at every stage of life?

As I approach my 70th birthday, I’ve realized that I’m no longer interested in chasing someone else’s definition of aging well. Instead, I’m focused on something that feels much more meaningful:

Aging authentically.

Authentic Doesn’t Mean “Natural”

One thing I’ve learned is that authenticity looks different for everyone.

For some women, aging authentically means embracing every wrinkle, every gray hair, and every laugh line.

For others, it means coloring their hair, getting Botox, enjoying facials, laser treatments, or investing in skincare that helps them feel confident.

Neither choice is more authentic than the other.

The problem begins when we judge women for the choices they make.

Why should anyone feel they have to explain whether they’ve had work done—or defend their decision not to?

Health Has Become My Priority

Over the past year, my own wellness journey has changed the way I think about aging.

Comprehensive blood work revealed that I was prediabetic. That became a turning point for me.

Today I prioritize protein, hydration, strength training, and overall health in ways I never did before.

Working out at Smart Fit Method has reminded me that building strength isn’t about looking younger—it’s about staying independent, energetic, and capable for decades to come.

For me, that’s what aging authentically looks like.

It’s taking care of my body so I can continue traveling, skiing, golfing, spending time with my grandchildren, and living life on my own terms.

Looking Good Is More Than Skin Deep

People often assume that looking good has everything to do with your face.

I don’t think that’s true.

Confidence changes how we carry ourselves.

Strength changes how we move.

Joy changes our expression.

Purpose changes our energy.

Those things can’t be injected or purchased.

Yes, I enjoy taking care of my skin.

Yes, I appreciate treatments that help me feel refreshed.

But none of those things replace the confidence that comes from knowing who you are.

The Pressure We Place on Women

Women receive mixed messages every day.

We’re told to age gracefully.

Then we’re criticized for showing signs of aging.

We’re applauded for looking youthful.

Then questioned about how we achieved it.

It’s exhausting.

What if we simply stopped judging one another?

What if we celebrated women who choose cosmetic treatments and women who don’t?

What if we recognized that confidence comes in many forms?

My Definition of Aging Authentically

To me, aging authentically means living honestly.

It means making choices because they feel right for me—not because someone else expects them.

It means investing in my health.

Taking care of my skin.

The Benefits of HydraFacials and DermaPlaning

Learning new things.

Trying new adventures.

Building strength.

Laughing often.

Surrounding myself with people I love.

And embracing every birthday as another opportunity to keep living fully.

I’m not trying to be 30 again.

I’m trying to become the healthiest, happiest, and most confident version of the woman I am today.

Maybe that’s what people really mean when they say someone “looks good for their age.”

Or maybe we should retire that phrase altogether.

Instead of saying, “You look good for your age,” perhaps we simply say:

“You look wonderful.”

Because beauty has never belonged to one age.

It belongs to every woman who chooses to live authentically.

I’d Love to Hear From You

What does aging authentically mean to you?

Does it include aesthetic treatments? Does it mean embracing every wrinkle? Is it about health, confidence, or something else entirely?

Share your thoughts in the comments. I have a feeling there isn’t one right answer—and that’s exactly the point.

Until next time!
