Interior Design: What does Cinderella,March Madness and the 2015 Atlanta Decorator Showhouse and Gardens have in Common?

What does Cinderella,March Madness and the 2015 Atlanta Decorator Showhouse and Gardens have in Common? - Part 1

This time of year references are made about Cinderella during March Madness, the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament which begins this weekend. Cinderella or Cinderella teams are teams no one really knows much about but are as talented and worthy of being invited to the Big Dance as well, let’s say my team, the Wisconsin Badgers, who are seeded first in their bracket. They hope to get to the championship game by beating everyone in their bracket and not go home early or when the clock strikes 12. They do not want to be one and done.
In my  world of interior  design in Atlanta, I am in the midst of my own March Madness because the Atlanta Symphony Decorator’s Show House and Gardens, is under way and I am one of the few Cinderella interior designers who have been invited to the ball………..

I consider myself to be one of the Cinderella interior designers of this prestigious event in a city of so many talented interior designers.  I am new to Atlanta, no one really knows me, and may I also mention, I clean my own home, just like Cinderella.
Like the Cinderella teams playing this weekend, I am honored to be invited to the ball.

There are a few of us who have never appeared in the Atlanta Decorator’s Show House and Gardens and we have to introduce ourselves to the public via the rooms we decorate. I have done show houses and appeared on national television, but still people do not know me in Atlanta. I need to introduce myself all over again.

As a publisher recently told me it all boils down to whether the Atlanta client wants a talented  interior designer or a hot and popular one. Hot and popular wins the race.
I hope I am smokin’ when this is all over.

How I was selected:

I was invited in October to preview the show house. I had to select 5 rooms and describe what I plan to do in each room, submit a bio, and my portfolio to the showhouse committee. Then they select which designer they want along with what room they should be decorating for the show house.

As I tour the home, I make new friends along the way and meet the chair, Allyson Kirkpatrick. Time for a group shot!

I was notified  by a phone call from a committee member that I was selected to be in the show house and I got the kitchen!!
Ready or not- my Botox Renovations™ is just what this kitchen needs!!

This yellow beauty is all mine! However, the yellow color scheme will be a thing of the past when I get done with this transformation….

I had to develop a design board and meet again with the committee in January to discuss my new vision for the kitchen.
This kitchen will represent my personality and my design style.
As a Botox Renovation™ I will not remove the cabinets, hardware, faucets, or the granite in this kitchen because they are fine. However I will repaint everything and update the space and make it new again!!!

The Selections:

The Paint Selection:  Benjamin Moore is a sponsor of this years showhouse and they have kindly given all the designers complimentary paint for their rooms! Yippee!

Ceiling paint: Buxton Blue #HC-149

See the chevron pattern in the fabric?
Next I will be adding 2 fantastic Don’t Fret drum shade pendants from Taylor Burke Home in coral.

Since I don’t have room for art, I want artistic floorcloths to replace the existing floorcloths.

The existing one appears in the photo below.

Before: original floorcloth in my kitchen

The original floor cloths are sealed to the floor, so I need to update them too or pay to have the whole kitchen floor refinished. I take the economic route…..
I want the floor cloths to look like  be a wallpaper and the colors will come from the copper hood.

My team has already begun the transformation of the kitchen and I will share it with you later this summer.

In the meantime, I will stay glued to the basketball tournament and see if any of the Cinderella teams make it to the Final Four. But I have my fingers crossed that a certain number 1 team makes it to the Big Dance……
