Lifestyle Over 50: Shredding for the Wedding

My life is a little hectic these days leading up to my son’s wedding in June and shredding for the wedding to look pretty walking down the aisle is no easy feat.

Maybe you can lose weight while standing on your head, but I can’t.

My daughter Lisa, has been enlisted to be my personal trainer as well as my Sammy’s to increase the intensity of our workout routine. Did I tell you she is a fitness instructor at Lifetime Fitness and she is serious about health and fitness. (Here’s another Fun Fact: Lisa played college basketball at William and Mary and she looks as good as she did playing ball. Don’t you think?)

Sammy and Lisa have been working out together for many months and I have Lisa write down a weekly schedule for Sammy and I to follow. I still work out at my favorite gym doing Body Pump with my over 50ish girls, but we have a gym at home where Lisa works out with us. We like to motivate Sammy to workout as a team sport because she hates to workout alone. But don’t we all? We are Lisa’s guinea pigs to new routines for Lifetime, so it’s a win win for all.

I tend to stick to Pilates (using my Denise Austin videos from the 90’s) and yoga. I  love the balance that yoga and Pilates bring to my weekly workouts.

It’s been so beautiful here in Atlanta we have taken our yoga classes outside.

It is fun working out with my girls and nice I have someone who will spot me on my handstands. I’m afraid of falling at 60 now and glad she doesn’t mind.

(Another fun fact: Lisa is doing a goofy “Look at your nails pose” that my silly family does in photos. You would have seen this pose in my family reunion post last summer. It’s a Wakefield thing.)

Another part of my new routine is cutting out as much “white food” from my diet, because I love sweets and pasta.

My favorite substitute for pasta has been spaghetti squash and every week I’m cooking up a “Faux Pasta” dish that my family just loves. I miss pasta but I’m going to see how much weight I actually lose by cutting out sugar and flour based foods.

You ladies know how surprising it is to have menopausal weight gain and we either accept and embrace our new bodies or step it it a notch in our workout routine and change how we eat. Our belly fat showed up on our doorstep when estrogen took an exit out the back door. It sucks, but it’s part of middle age.

For you skinny people out there reading this, God bless you if menopause hasn’t affected you but the majority of women post menopause said, “What?” (It’s actually 3 words, but I don’t drop the F-bomb)

I have exactly 10 weeks to be ready to walk down the aisle for my son’s wedding and one of those dresses that made it to the Final Four will need me to whittle my middle!

Thanks for stopping by on my journey to the wedding.

You are doing so well! When I heal from his appendectomy, I’m headed to Piyo. I’ve got just enough injuries, that I needed to blend my routine and did, but I’ll be putting it on hold for a couple of weeks!

      Julie,

      Absolutely heal first!
I didn’t exercise for 6 months following my foot surgery because I couldn’t walk on it>
It doesn’t help us over 50ish girls when we have injuries and need to heal slower than when we were younger!

      Hugs!
